Print Friendly MapThe Highway 89 South Pedestrian Trail begins south of downtown Livingston and parallels U.S. Highway 89 for 3.8 miles. A wide grassy median separates the paved pathway from the roadway and the surrounding views are undeniably rural; you'll be traveling through open fields with forested foothills off in the distance to either side. The trail also loosely follows the Yellowstone River.
One day, the trail is hoped to extend farther south to Gardiner at the doorstep to Yellowstone National Park.
Parking is available a short distance from the southern end of the trail via on-road riding on East River Road to reach the Carters Bridge Fishing Access Site.
I was traveling through the area and looking for somewhere safe to run where I would not be on the roads. I parked at the Town and Country Grocery Store, crossed the street to pick up the path and headed south. The path follows Highway 89 (as the name suggests) so expect to be traveling alongside the road. I went 4 miles out and 4 miles back.
This trail is a segment of the Great American Rail-Trail (GART).
Location: Livingston, MT
Trail Condition: The 2.7 miles from Livingston south needs maintenance, serious maintenance in some areas (overgrown, weeds up through pavement, cracks, etc.) The trail is passable. The last mile is new and in excellent condition.
Signage: No directional, some warning.
Comments: This trail parallels busy highway 89 into Yellowstone National Park. However, a good part of it is a little distance from the road, decreasing the busy highway distraction. TrailLink lists this trail as 2.7 miles long, however, an additional mile of trail has been recently added to the trail, making this 3.7 miles long.
