Liberty Trail Description

The Liberty Trail runs for 9.5 miles between New Orleans Street (101st Street) by Northeastern State University and where it meets the Mingo Trail near Creek Turnpike and Mingo Valley Expressway. The trail follows the South Loop of the Broken Arrow toll road until it reaches the university, where the Liberty Trail ends.

Compared with other Tulsa trails, the Liberty Trail passes through more greenspace (toll road aside), linking the university with neighborhoods to the west and providing the perfect non-motorized way to access the city. The trail is hilly in some areas.

Parking and Trail Access

Park at the campus of Northeastern State University (Broken Arrow Campus), at Aspen Ave/145th E Ave., at New Orleans/101st St. east of Garnett Rd. and at E. 95th St. and Garnett Rd.

Liberty Trail Reviews

Starting at NSU, the ride seems easy but coming back up that hill can be a chore. I'd recommend this trail (and the adjoining Creek turnpike trails) for intermediate riders. most of it is relatively flat but the hilly parts can be tough. If you decide to continue on toward the Creek trail and the riverside east/west trails, you can enjoy some good riding. This trail is well maintained with some decent scenery. Make sure to bring your water, there is one fountain near Tulsa Tech but the water is turned off from oct-through winter months.

(note: I would consider myself an intermediate rider (40-50 mile rides are my norm)So take that into consideration when reading this review. )

This is a solid trail system. Starting near Grace Church, the scenery rocks... I used to cycle it but now being a long distance inline skater, I have found this trail to have it's good and bad parts. There is only one thing that keeps me from rating it a 5. The first thing is that there is only one water fountain in 9.5 miles. For those of us who are without bikes (having several bottles to carry), this makes things rough.I wear a belt with a bottle on the back but with a long skate like today, water was truly needed. I thought for sure there would be one at NSUBA but nothing... For those of you looking to ride it or run it, bring extra water. Other than that, the trail is pretty smooth in a few places and super smooth in others. The only other thing I wish it had were lights. Many of us have weird schedules. This would be a huge help!

My wife and I just started biking. Only biked 11 miles on this trail and it took us 70 minutes. We are not fast ones. But we liked the slight hills and modest scenery. Great place to bike then watch a movie when you are done. Theater is only one mile away. We did.

On August 22, 2010, I biked the Liberty Trail starting around 8:30AM at the trail-end near NSU-Broken Arrow Campus. Nice rolling hills. Not too many people. Trail width holds 2 lanes (2-way). Going under bridges, the width narrows and you have to slow down as you can not see if there is runners or bikers coming in your lane or not. Has a few areas with overgrown johnson grass. Just needs a little TLC. Pavement is brand-new. I am just starting to bike again after laying off for 10 years. I think the trail could use some visual appealing elements. Maybe some flowers or other visual elements. I saw some long-horn cattle in a nearby field on my way back.
