Colorado's Lower Loop Trail offers a wonderful scenic route along the Slate River with views of snowcapped mountains and wildflowers. It connects the town of Crested Butte to the Oh Be Joyful Recreation Area. The trail is fairly level and traverses several different types of terrain, as well as a reclaimed mine site. Riders would be comfortable on either a hybrid or mountain bike. An alternative return that is more hilly is the Upper Lower Loop Trail.
Parking is available on-street in downtown Crested Butte.
For those rail trail enthusiasts who prefer consistent crushed gravel, this trail offers that for a bit. Close to Slate River it turns to big rocks and tree ruts. Definitely a mountain bike trail not a rail trail.
