The trail user can be transported from the bustling Westwood Fitness and Sports Center to a beautiful wooded trail that offers Elkhorn Creek on the far outer loop of the trail, a shelter at the top of small hill overlooking a man made lake, and a some gentle rolling hills all within 2 miles of trails. If you want to venture out of the Westwood area, one can head southeast to the intersection of Lynn Blvd and West LeFevre Rd. You then cross over Lynn Blvd to the 1.7 mile path that heads up Lynn Blvd with a couple of gradual inclines until the trail ends at YMCA Way.
There is ample parking at the Westwood Fitness & Sports Center at 1900 Westwood Drive. The facility is located off of west LeFevere Road, about 2 miles west of Illinois Rout 40. If you want to park close to the trailhead you can park near Building 3 which is at the far north end of the property. The trail head is just northwest of the building. There are also other access points for the trail north of the Westwood property. If you park at the other end of the trail there are spaces either in the main parking lot for CVS and Kroger as well as some parking spaces in back of that property directly across from the start of the trail. This trail head is just west of the stoplight at the intersection of Illinois Rout 40 and Lynn Boulevard.
I haven’t done the complete trail, only the part in the park near the rec-center. The portion in the park is paved, asphalt, and is mostly wooded. Plenty of turns and short climbs/decent. Visibility isn’t great due to trees and turns so not a top speed location. I did 2 laps in the park with my special needs son using his adaptive bike. Several other trail users were walking. There is a portion of this trail that runs along Lynne Blvd. That part is essentially a sidewalk or off-street path. We did not go on that portion.
