North-South Connector Trail Description

The aptly-named North-South Connector Trail provides a paved trail connection between the communities of Gibraltar and Trenton, in the area south of Detroit known as the Downriver. Part of a developing trail network called the Downriver Linked Greenways, the North-South Connector Trail allows cyclists and pedestrians to easily commute between the two cities, while providing access to a number of riverside recreation sites along the way, making it a fantastic way to explore the area.

Starting in the south, the trail begins in the heart of the small city of Gibraltar - concrete sidewalks lead from the asphalt trail to the Battle of Brownstown Memorial outside of town, at the junction of the East-West Connector Trail and the Lake Erie Metropark Trail. Heading north along the trail, you pass through a wooded plot on the outskirts of town before joining the side of W Jefferson Avenue. On your right, you'll pass by the entrance to the future site of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, which is under construction as of fall 2019. Once built, the site will offer a number of nature trails and a chance to learn about the history of the area and the thriving ecosystem along the river. The trail continues north along the road and enters into Elizabeth Park in Trenton, a lovely recreation site located on a small island in the river - the park offers great spots for fishing and picnicking, and hosts seasonal events such as ice skating in the winter and a jazz series in the summer. The trail hugs the bank of a river outlet on the outskirts of the park, coming to an end at the south end of downtown Trenton.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking is available at Elizabeth Park in Trenton, located on W Jefferson Avenue just north of Grosse Ile Parkway. Additional parking may be available on-street or at local businesses in Gibraltar; be sure to follow any posted parking signs and regulations. To reach the trail from Interstate 75, take exit 32A and proceed east on West Road into Trenton. Continue for several miles and then turn right onto W Jefferson; the entrance to Elizabeth Park will be straight ahead.

Great trail to skate on. Loved it!

Smooth Sailing

Such a lovely trail! Super smooth and great to skate on. Not many sticks or rocks in the way. Slightly hilly by bit awful. Was a great evening skate. Would definitely recommend.

Smooth Sailing

This was such a smooth trail! Super easy to skate down. Very beautiful scenery. Great time to skate is at sunset like we did. The sky was on fire. ¿¿¿¿¿
