The Oconto River State Trail offers an 8-mile crushed limestone, level-grade pathway between Stiles Junction and Oconto, which sits on the shores of Lake Michigan. Along the way, you'll enjoy a mixture of forest and pasture views.
At the trail's eastern end, you can hop on the Copper Culture Trail to reach Copper Culture State Park, which offers picnic areas and access to the Oconto River by canoe, kayak or other boat. Learn more about the unique history of its Native American archaeological site at the park's museum.
At the trail's western end, you can visit the historic Stiles Junction Railroad Station, built in 1881 and listed on the Wisconsin Historic Register. The depot is located on Duame Road, about 0.25 mile south of the US 141 and State Route 22 intersection.
A parking lot is available at the western end of the trail in Stiles Junction, off Military Road (south of its junction with SR 22). Additional parking can be found at the east end of the trail in Copper Culture State Park (Copper Culture Way, south of SR 22).
Stopped purposely in Oconto to ride this trail. Mistakenly thought that by now the trail would have been cleaned up — that was a big NO. First, there’s no parking, no signs even indicating that it’s a trail and when we stopped to check it out it was nothing but a rutted path that was overgrown with a rusted rotting gate. Such a sad, forgotten trail.
I think that this trail was once part of a lost civilization. This is because there has been zero maintenance for years. When I finally found the East entrance, there was tall grass and trees crossing the trail. Very disappointed as I had driven to Oconto just to ride the trails. However, the Copper Culture State Park is a great place to visit.
Clearly low bike use. Looked like it would be best for snow mobiles....i saw no gravel.
It was like a long straight tunnel with very little variety in landscape. Tough riding as the trail was not well maintained. Kind of boring.
Mowed, but not had gravel or stone added in years. Very rough and rutted as far as we went, about 2.5 miles from the west trailhead.
Expected some level of maintenance. There was none. Weeds to 18", minimal gravel and at least 30% mud. Barely passable in a tiire rut.
. Waste of time as a ride.
