The Rose Creek Bikeway closes a gap in San Diego's regional trail system, easing connections from Sorrento Valley and University City in the north to Mission Bay and downtown San Diego in the south. The trail stretches about 2 miles, picking up from the southern end of the Rose Canyon Bike Path. The 14-foot wide, two-lane path travels parallel to Santa Fe Road for just over the first mile, where it begins its divergence from the road. A 260-foot bridge delivers users safely over Rose Creek. The trail continues south under Interstate 5 and Mission Bay Drive, along the channelized creek, until it meets the Rose Creek Bike Path. The older path isn't quite as smooth or scenic as the new on, but it leads to the Mike Gotch Memorial Bridge and the Mission Bay Bike Path, which circles the bay and in turn connect to the San Diego River Trail.
The Rose Creek Bikeway is part of the Coastal Rail Trail, which stretches 44 miles between Oceanside City and San Diego. The trail is useful as a commuting route as well as a leisurely recreation path.
