The Shot Pouch Greenway is a multiuse trail connecting Dillon Park and Swan Lake-Iris Gardens in the city of Sumter. Serving as a vital transportation link for the surrounding communities, the trail provides a safe and efficient route for cyclists and pedestrians to access local businesses, restaurants, schools, community resources, and other amenities.
The trail is entirely paved, providing a smooth and level surface. The bridge on Haynsworth Street, which crosses Shot Pouch Branch, and the bridge in Dillon Park have both been replaced with steel bridges.
Following the Shot Pouch Branch, the trail meanders through woods and open meadows. Along the way, visitors can enjoy scenic views of the stream and the surrounding landscape.
Dillon Park has a dog park (1210 Clara Louise Kellogg Dr), an 18-hold golf course, a disc golf course, a couple small lakes, a playground, and multiple sports fields and courts.
Swan Lake Iris Gardens has numerous amenities and recreational opportunities, including a playground, several pavilions, the Rose Garden, the Azalea Garden, the Butterfly Garden, the Chocolate Garden, and the Sensory Trail designed for those who are the sight-impaired.
Parking is available at several locations along the Shot Pouch Greenway, including Dillon Park (1305 Clara Louise Kellogg Dr) and Swan Lake Iris Gardens (822 W Liberty St, Sumter).
This trail is well maintained and mostly flat. The parking lot on the Swan Lake end was under construction so I had to park near the Swan Lake-Iris Gardens Visitors Center and cross the road to get to the trail. The people inside the center were really nice and told me how to get to the trail head. I like that they have buttons and walk signs at a few of the intersections. Be mindful that the only restrooms are at the trail heads (unless you want to try going off trail into a local business along the way).
