The Swift Creek Trail combines a trail segment running the length of Isle la Plume and a walking trail that was the initiative of staff of the Gundersen Health System in La Crosse. The trail begins in Houska Park at the northern tip of Isle la Plume on the Mississippi River. The park features a playground, dog park and other recreation amenities. It's also a spot where you can view the US 14 bridge over the Great Mississippi.
The paved trail goes from Houska Park, past the wastewater treatment plant to the south end of the island. A bike-ped bridge takes users across the water to Cook Street and into Green Island Park. The park is home to an ice-hockey arena. Crossing 7th Street brings to the Gundersen Health walking path, curving along the riverbank up to the edge of a large parking lot serving the health complex.
The trail serves residents of the Powell-Poage-Hamilton neighborhood of La Crosse as well as Gundersen staff and patients.
Parking options include Houska Park (1011 Joseph Houska Dr, La Crosse, WI 54601) and Green Island Park (2312 7th St S, La Crosse, WI 54601). The Gundersen Health Parking lot on the east end of the trail is private.
The trail head is located at the city sewage treatment plant and a large homeless camp. Lots of foul smells for about the first 1/2 mile. No lighting along most of the trail also creates higher level of concern due to the homeless camp. The southern half of the trail was nice.
