Indiana’s Trolley Line Trail runs through popular Happy Hollow Park in West Lafayette. In addition to the paved trail, the 81-acre park offers a softball field, open turf area, hiking trails, playgrounds and picnic shelters. A sledding hill is often packed with families in the winter.
The trail occupies a portion of the route of the Lafayette Street Railway, which ceased operations in 1940. Lafayette’s streetcar system is famous as the first to be fully electrified in Indiana—the railroad’s owners having completed the task in 1888. Now, the route's dense woodland surroundings provide a peaceful place for a walk, run or bike ride.
Parking for the Trolley Line Trail is available in Happy Hollow Park along the park entranceway off Happy Hollow Road.
This trail is great for a exercising people who prefer a challenge. The trail is all uphill from Happy Hollow Park to Indian Trail Drive. About half way up, there is a nice side trail (even more challenging) with stairs that ends at N Salisbury St. I would not recommend this trail for anyone with any type of physical restriction.
The hills made it a little difficult for me to rollerskate, but I am a beginner. I really enjoyed the trail though!
I went down from Kingston Drive. Nice winding path. Went through the playground of Happy Hollow Park, then went up hill to Indian Trail Dr. Took the wind out of me, but the trail is wide, and well kept. There are some nice, gabbion walls in the stream. Very different sort of area in the heart of West Lafayette. Google Maps calls this Wabash Heritage Trail, I believe this is correct with the latest additions and integrations of paths.
I then took Lindberg Rd over to the Cattail Trail and the Northwest Greenway to finish out at Hadley lake. Lovely Ride. Saw the biggest woodchuck of my life.
