West Alton Trail Description

The West Alton Trail occupies the right-of-way of an old railroad bed. The crushed-stone trail runs for 2 miles between St. Charles Street at US 67 in West Alton and the Lincoln-Shields Recreation Area at the Mississippi River near the William Clark bridge. The recreation area has a boat launch, picnicking, and restrooms.

Parking and Trail Access

From St. Louis take Highway 367 north, cross the Missouri River and then make a right on Spur Dike Access Road (by Fisca Service Station). Make an immediate left on the access road and go under Clark Bridge to the new Lincoln-Shields Recreation Area.

West Alton Trail Reviews

I crossed the Clark Bridge a while back, and took a ride down the West Alton Trail from the Lincoln Shields Rec area, which is mostly parking lot. The further along the trail you go, the worse it is maintained. Beyond a certain point, I couldn't go any further because of the overgrowth, which was so thick, I couldn't have WALKED through it. At this point, one begins to feel just how isolated they are. I booked back to the Rec area post-haste!
