Murfreesboro's Stones River Greenway System

Scary & Unsafe

December, 2016 by cleonard_tl

Use to walk the Thompson Lane Trail Head often. Now the trail is so overgrown and out of control, that it is scary for women to walk alone in fear of predators hiding in weeds and bushes. Just is not a safe place anymore.

overgrown

Years ago I use to walk my dog on this trail every day and admire the beauty of the river, What happened? I visited the trail after leaving the area for a few years and I cant even see the river now it is so over grown! I would love to put together a clean up crew/group to revive the view of the river!

Shelby Bottoms Greenway

Gem of a trail

November, 2016 by david.laferney

It's a great park-trail experience with no substantial hills except (optionally) if you cross the pedestrian bridge over the Cumberland river. The trails and the parking area have a very safe feel to them. Bring your own water!

My Wife, 11-year-old Grandaughter, and I started from the parking lot under the railroad trestle in Shelby park. We rode North on the main trail - crossed the pedestrian bridge to wave country - then continued to the north end of the park, around the north loop, then returned to Shelby park. Just under 10 miles including a bit of messing around in the parking lots to check out our gear. There are other paved connectors and side trails that you could explore if you have the time and inclination.

The trail going up to the pedestrian bridge, and on - through a tunnel under the interstate -to the trailhead at wave country are pretty steep - but very much worth the effort. As we were crossing the bridge, the General Jackson river boat passed under it for a great photo op - and the return ride down the long hill is great fun. Just make sure your brakes are in working order first!

As others have mentioned - use the bathroom before you start and bring enough water.

The reason I give this trail less than 5 stars is that even though it's a great trail, and well worth the (2hr) drive to get to it - it just doesn't have the level of spectacular scenery or interesting landscapes - like the Virginia Creeper, or Chattanooga river park trail. Still - a great resource for mid-TN recreational bikers.

Shelby Bottoms Greenway

TN 2 Step, 2nd Move

August, 2016 by koldtoess

Having partially rode the Shelby Bottoms Greenway (SBG) during the Tour de Nash, I was excited about ridding it thoroughly after starting on the Stones River Greenway. Upon crossing the Cumberland River Pedestrian Bridge, I rode the upper loop through wooded low lands and swampy open areas. Looping and passing under the bridge, I took the first right about a half mile south. This will take you to a decommissioned airport where it is just plain FUN to race the strip and explore the area. Repeat the spur and take the following right to “make miles” and get you to Fortland Drive. Returning back to the trail proper, you will encounter a couple of creek crossing with the Cumberland River on your side. The Shelby Park trailhead is at the Nature Center under the L&N RR bridge. Ride recommendations: (1) continue riding around or through Shelby Park and ride the Davidson Street (industrial area) dedicated bike lane around Nissan Stadium to downtown “Nashvegas” thus connecting to Cumberland River Greenway or (2) take the SBG loop at the rear of the Nature Center back to trail and yo-yo as long as you want. The trail is about as flat, enjoyable, easy and smooth as it gets but bring enough water. Another great trail, Nashville’s Greenways are awesome!
I would recommend if you are traveling along I-40 and need to do some cranking, you would do yourself a favor by hitting the unique local trails in both Nashville and Memphis.

Stones River Greenway

TN 2 Step, 1st Move

August, 2016 by koldtoess

I came in on the backside of a storm to tackle the Stones River (SR) Greenway. I parked at the Percy Priest Dam trailhead and immediately started going downhill under I-40 along the SR. To explore the entire trail, I took the first spur to the left which led through a nice wooded area to dog-leg right under a stone railroad tussle. This section of the trial has multiple forks: Stewarts Ferry Pike, Clover Bottom Mansion and the YMCA Trailhead. Please review your map prior because you may become easily disoriented. At a point along the trail you can avoid a steep up-and-down by taking the marked handicap by-pass. Upon returning to the SRG (ride under the RR bridge on your return) you will continue downhill to a gorgeous boardwalk at/above the river’s edge. Next, you will arrive at the Kohl’s trailhead and cross the SR on a bike/walk dedicated steel truss bridge. You will love the following scenic section by riding the wide closed roadway by the beautiful Stone Hall mansion, a rustic log cabin, the SR and the defunct Ravenwood CC. While down-hilling you will get your first glance at the Cumberland River and cross the SR near their confluence. Up, up and up the very, very steep hill to ride under McGavock Pike/Two Rivers Park. The greenway takes you away from the majestic Two River Mansion but it is worth the ride through the park to visit. The capstone of the SRG is the Cumberland River Pedestrian Bridge. I was fortunate enough to see a towboat with barges rounding the bend and going under the bridge toward Nashville, stop and enjoy! Per other reviews; there are a few stops with porta-potties (they are constructing a nice facility at the dam), no good access to water/drinks, no emergency repair stations and a few steeper than normal trail grades. Overall the trail has a few minor challenges but it rewards you with an awesomeness! I continued the day’s ride to the Shelby Bottoms Greenway via the bridge.

Harpeth River Greenway

Lovely Stroll

June, 2016 by utmatt1023

Starting in the lovely Edwin Warner Park and winding along the river through Bellevue, this is a scenic trail with just enough foot and bike traffic to not be concerned about being alone, but certainly not heavily used. I gave it four stars because there are no water fountains at any of the multiple entry/ exit points or anywhere along the trail. This may not be a concern for many users, but I'm a runner and I don't typically carry water with me.

Our Shelby Bottoms Greenway Ride

May, 2016 by weaverdennisl

My wife and I were visiting Nashville for a few days and brought our bikes so we could ride trails listed on TrailLink. We started our first day ride at Two Rivers Park trail head. We barely had to pedal for a couple of miles as we were mostly going downhill. You know there is no reward without earning it. We new we would have to finish our ride going back up those hills. They weren't to bad though (my wife disagrees a little). What a GREAT trail, we loved it. Great paved trails, surrounded by nature, mostly an easy ride except for a couple of short steep inclines near the river crossing. We never saw any gravel roads as described. We managed to rack up a wonderful 17 mile ride. For you racers out there, beware there is a 15 mile an hour speed limit on the trail.

Murfreesboro's Stones River Greenway System

Very enjoyable trail

May, 2016 by salafaour

The trail run in my backyard on stones river , me my wife and the kids get on the trail several times every week , kids ride their segways or skate boards , we ride our bikes or walk , a lot of nice scneary areas on the river , beautiful flowers , trees , and abundant wild life , we've seen deer , turkey , snakes , fox , oposoms, raccoons , blue hearion crane, ducks , gees , a peacock, rabbits, beavers ....
To see all those animals right in the middle of the city is amazing
The trail is very easy for bike ride to since most of it flat .
You can also fish in stone river , I caught 9 lb bass and a lot of cat fish , canoeing is very nice on stone river , just get mosquitos repellant on hot summer evening .

Cumberland River Greenway

enjoyable ride!!

April, 2016 by geddythekitty

As with a lot of trails starting out in cities, you'll go through indrustrial areas. This one is no different, but once you get past the water plant you have a nice ride by the river. Smooth flat surface, with great river views. Couple of entrances with water fountains. It was a beautiful day, but very few ( less the ten) people took advantage of it. Did see a homeless camp but felt no fear at all.

Old Hickory Dam Greenway

Old Hickory Dam Greenway

August, 2015 by cherylnotwork

Gorgeous, well maintained trail over wetlands and surrounded by towering trees that keep it cool even in the heat. If you are lucky, you'll see the resident eagles whose nest is adjacent to the trail. I'd give it 5 stars, but there is a strip mine being built right next to it. Developers are being held up temporarily from further bulldozing by local, state and federal agencies who are investigating. Hopefully you will join the fight to help save the Old Hickory Dam Greenway. For more information see https://www.facebook.com/StopOldHickoryLakeQuarry
