It was a warm February day for a ride. I had heard that trees may be down from the January 2026 ice storm along the trail. Thankfully crews have diligently cleared the trail from debris. I was amazed by the number of trees snapped in two by ice, even the old, massive ones. The townsfolk in Ecru were friendly and some ladies in New Albany gave some good dinner recommendations.
A new mile and a quarter extension has been added to the trail with the
trailhead on Lenow Road. All Paved and crosses Macon Road three times. Beautiful trail making it more accessible to residents. They are currently redoing the mile markers. The parking lot could use some security cams as only moderate traffic passes by with no nearby residents. Cornfield on one side and The TVA on the other. I'm grateful to have it so close to my home.
Great connector from the heart of Memphis to the outskirts. Lots of trail spurs off of the main route once you get out east. With a little road riding easily connect to trails taking you in to AR.
Another great February day. The welcome center in New Albany is great. I love this trail. The campground in Pontotoc is nice the barrooms could use a bit of updating but they are useable. Had a great time in Mississippi.
Great trail a bit rough in spots but had a great breakfast in Algoma at the country store. Great eggs and sausage. Fantastic February weather.
We got lucky with great weather for a mid February ride. Trail was in good condition, but not excellent. Stopped at Bap’s barbecue in Pontotoc for lunch. Ended with sweets from Sugaree’s bakery in New Albany.
10-14-2024. We got on at W. Reynolds Street in Pontotoc, MS and rode to New Albany at the trailhead. The asphalt is in very good condition with some cracks. There are lots of little bridges you cross but they are covered with 2x6 boards and it is very rough-makes your teeth rattle. We had a nice lunch in New Albany at Tallahatchie Gourmet.
Great trail to ride , started in New Albany by the library rode to Ecru 22 miles round trip ! The train station stops are very nice including Ingmor , cold water , clean restrooms, and an ice chest filled with candy bars Dorthy has the stop decorated with beautiful flowers and plants! Great job , if your a cyclist and traveling through Mississippi a must stop trail to ride !
Entered the trail on Beale Street. Pretty accessible and clean. They doing some repairs but not blocking the trail. Went over the big bridge across the Mississippi River into Arkansas side. Easy run on passing. The return over the bridge has a pretty nice incline great workout.
The trail is completely paved and smoothed. We had a great time and did the entire 44 miles both ways. Here's the sad truth. It would earn 5 starts if it was in a different location.... Or make a connecting trail to Tupelo. This would allow a cyclists to hook up with the Natchez Trace Parkway and do a complete triangle. I would not recommend riding this in the summer as it goes through several low forested areas where bugs and humidity would be unbearable. We cycled this on a beautiful April weekend and we only saw maybe 6 other cyclists the entire time. This is not a cycling mecca and therefore the trail is not supported like it could/should be. A trailside lemonade stand would go under if it depended on trail users!
We would HIGHLY recommend staying at Daisy's on the Square in Houston and Eating their steak & baked potato!!
Pros: smooth, safe, You can't get lost!
Cons: Not enough trail users to support this hidden crown jewel. (small population base) Could use a shuttle service if you only want to go one way.
trailside depot restrooms aren't cleaned very often. Our Gold Standard is the Katy Trail depot Restrooms which are always clean!
We rode from Pontotoc to the south end in Houston and back. It was a beautiful ride and paved all the way. The temp was 50 to 70 with little wind. It was very enjoyable. We did encounter a cottonmouth at about mile marker 13 so keep an eye out.
