Glenwood Canyon Recreation Trail

16 miles each way - but a great ride thru the Canyon

July, 2020 by grundberg

We came from Vail and parked in Dotsero at the trailhead - follow signs for Glenwood Springs Trailhead where the road dead ends. Took the pedestrian bridge over to the restaurant area of Glenwood for lunch before heading back.

South Canyon Trail

Stink, Stank, Stunk

July, 2020 by acewickwire

Location: Glenwood Springs, CO
Parking: South Canyon Bridge & Devereux Rd
Trail Condition: S Canyon Bridge segment (western) is wide paved trail with a lot of debris thrown on to it from the adjacent interstate, needs maintenance. The eastern segment has nice wide path and well maintained.
Signage: None
Comments: Not much to say about the S. Canyon Bridge segment (western), it is short and unmaintained. TrailLink map implies that the old bridge can be accessed but is not the case anymore. A metal bar has been placed across the bridge entrance. A faded signs states no jumping from bridge and close by is a memorial site for a young man, did he jump from the bridge? The eastern segment travels behind a number of businesses and hotels, with the river on the other side of the trail. There are lots of shade trees, some benches, and picnic tables. At the western end of this segment of trail there is a sewage treatment plant and you go right past the nasty smelling tank with icky brown sludge being stirred up. On a warm day it is not a place you want to be. The trails at the edge of the interstate.

Midland Avenue Trail

Good Connector

July, 2020 by acewickwire

Location: Glenwood Springs, CO
Parking: Devereux Rd
Trail Condition: Western end of trail is newer and trail condition is excellent, wide and concrete. Towards the east the trail is fine but with some cracking.
Signage: Good directional signs.
Comments: This is a good connector trail from west Glenwood Springs to downtown Glenwood Springs and other trails in that area. There are several underpasses and a new overpass to avoid busy streets into the Glenwood Meadows shopping district. Some minor uphill and downhill. It worthy of a ride.

Glenwood Canyon Recreation Trail

Must Do This One

July, 2020 by acewickwire

Location: Glenwood Springs, CO
Trail Condition: Overall trail condition is very good with some portions better/newer than others but no major issues.
Signage: Some directional signs. Plus a number of interpretive signs about the history & geology of the canyon.
Comments: I did this trail a number of years ago and wanted to do again. It still is worth repeated visits. This time was on a Friday and not as much traffic as a weekend but still plenty of users. I measured distance of 16 miles from entrance next to vapor caves to the trailhead at the eastern end of canyon. This includes the portion of road at No Name. Next time I’ll start trail at eastern trailhead in the morning when winds are calm through the canyon, then on return trip the winds can pick-up and push me back to start. There were lots of rafters on the river to watch. Even caught one of them mooning the Amtrak train as it passed through the canyon.

Rio Grande Trail

Aspen to Carbondale

June, 2020 by dobsonguy

Janet and I were staying in Willits, across CO82 from Basalt. We took the VelociRFTA bus to Aspen with our Brompton folding bikes, and rode down 23 miles to Willits on the trail. The next day we rode to Carbondale and back. The trail has been improved since we rode it in 2011, with more paving, and the section that was on county rd 100 is now on separate paved trail. There is still the section near Aspen that is crushed gravel -- no problem. This is such a pleasant ride.

Brush Creek Trail (CO)

Not a Good Trail for Inline

September, 2019 by taylor.stehlik

Very hilly (for an inline skater) with curves and stop signs at the bottom of the hill. I would not recommend this trail for Inline Skaters.

Eagle Valley Trail

Edwards to Vail

July, 2019 by acewickwire

Although not mentioned in the trail description there is another section of the Eagle Valley Trail from the west end of Edwards towards the east to the intersection of the Gore Valley Trail east of the small town of Eagle-Vail. Additionally, they are actively working on the trail to the east of Eagle with about 6 miles completed. Will ride that section before long and report on progress.

Started this section of the trail in Edwards. Parked in the free underground parking garage at the Riverwalk shopping area. Easy trail access from the garage. (Major construction on the Edwards Access Road and Hwy 6 intersection.) Starting at the garage avoided having to ride through construction zone. Rode east to the Gore Valley Trail (0.0 mile marker is at the intersection of Gore Creek and Eagle River) and then another 5 miles to the Lionshead parking garage in Vail. This was a steady gradual uphill climb to Vail. Nothing bad but is uphill.

The trail is good condition and with some cracking. It is a wide path for the most part and well marked, better than the section in Eagle and Gypsum. For a Wednesday morning there was a lot of traffic (bikers, runners, boarders, walkers, etc.) on much of the trail. Easy enough to get around but do need to watch going around blind corners.

The trail follows closely along the Eagle River, past condos, golf courses, riparian areas, etc. There are some sections alongside Hwy 6 and the portion through Eagle-Vail is on the main road with wide shoulders. Portion of the Gore Valley Trail is also along the Frontage Road but not a lot of traffic.

Overall I enjoyed this trail and would do it again.

Future adventure will be to ride from Lionshead parking garage east to the top of Vail Pass. Will be lots of uphill on that trail.

Eagle Valley Trail

Poorly Marked Trail – Go Prepared

July, 2019 by acewickwire

Make sure you have access to a trail map before starting this one. There is some signage but very little and not enough to figure out the trail route.

Started on the West end of trail at Duck Pond (near Dotsero) and rode into Eagle to where the trail seemed to just end, no signage indicating which direction to go. Had gone far enough to call it quits at that point.

First part of trail followed along the river with a good trail surface. Got misplaced in Gypsum and had to back track some. No signage in town at all. From Gypsum to Eagle trail condition was ok with some cross trail cracking and short section of construction at end of airport runway.

Not a flat trail but no steep grades either. Didn’t realize the elevation gain from Dotsero end to Eagle until the return trip.

Worthy of a check when in the area.

Glenwood Canyon Recreation Trail

Spectacular “pedal trip”

October, 2018 by daireemt

My wife and I rode this in late September. Gorgeous weather and scenery. Trail has 2 or 3 brief (few 100 yards) steep sections, but is generally a very gentle uphill path. Can be understandably noisy with I-70 noise, but is still a wonderful biking experience. We rode from Glenwood to Bair Ranch exit and back to Glenwood. Awesome in spite of our mutual head colds!!

Wonderful bike experience

October, 2018 by daireemt

My wife and I rode late September. Beautiful day and scenery. We went from Glenwood to Carbondale and in spite of our mutual head colds, found the trail to be an easy enough ride. Winds did pick up in the afternoon, but not enough to be a detriment

Spend the night next to the trail

September, 2018 by victoria.g.alexander

I biked this trail when I was pregnant. Now I want to bike
it both ways in 2 days with my child in a bike trailer. Do you guys know of any Airbnb’s or some type of lodging right off the bike trail with a restaurant within walking distance? I do not want to travel on roads with my child. Thanks!!
