Great Rides

September, 2018 by merlinsolis

We spent two days in Abington for the trail. One day for each direction. We came down to White Top on day one to Abington and reversed our direction on day 2. We saw deer, wild turkey and rabbits early in the morning. A shading canopy made it most delightful. Most people ride down from White Top but the ride up is great too. It starts at one percent for a few miles, then two and finally three. With 45 bridges and all the historical and info markers, it is quite a ride. I recommend avoiding weekends as it gets very busy. Damascus is fun and thecrestaurants in Abington are exceptional. And there are NO fast food joints. Go and have a great time. Oh yea, no cell service so take a spare tube and the necessary tools for the trip.

messy Monday

August, 2018 by cindy.gerner.5

We took a shuttle to Whitetop Station and planned on riding the entire trail then back to Damascus where we parked. The rain was so heavy there only made it back to Damascus where the young man at Damascus Adventure hosed our bikes and us down. It seems to me the trail between Whites and Damascus could use a little grading and more gravel on the surface. The re could be some pruning on the trees and shrubs too. I wish the weather would have cooperated but it is what it is. I would love to go back and try again. There were plenty of friendly people on the trail and on the shuttle.

Salt Trail

Secluded little trail.

August, 2018 by atkinsproperties

Since the previous reviews were written a lot must have changed on the Salt trail. On my visit the trail was well kept with and The trail is seldom used but has two nice cinder/gravel travel lanes with grass in between. It's a very smooth and tree canopy covered ride. As other have said this trail ends and one must used the road to access the Saltville portion. This is result of a mine collapse several years ago. Never the less there is still 7 miles of secluded trail before the trail meets the road. At 14 miles round trip (skip the road) this trail is definitely the road less traveled. I ride this trail a few times a year and have yet to pass another cyclist.

"Gentle" or "Killer"?

July, 2018 by peterharnik1

The overview says the trail has a gentle grade, but most of the reviewers focus on its notable steepness. It sounds like it's actually one of the steepest rail-trails in the country.

just wonderful bike trail

July, 2018 by alanbuy1

We went 4.8 out and back. Nice combo of up and down gentle incline decline. Light packed gravel. I have Trek Dual sport and good for this since little wider tire. Good wide trail.

Kingsport Greenbelt

Nice easy trail for a fun ride

June, 2018 by SoFlaKettwiesel

Parked at the “Kingsport Greenbelt Parking” area on Stonebrook Pl, close to the middle of the trail. A porta-potty is at the North end of the parking lot. We went East, alongside the Reddy Creek most of the time. Changes from urban to rural and back in short order, Good separation from most roads. Hilly toward the east end, pavement stops at the 0.4 mile marker. Went west for the rest of the trail. Trail under construction between Cherokee Village Drv and Branch St. Some signage for the trail, but Trailink map more helpful. Restrooms and parking up the stairs (36.551001, -82.596088) just west of Centennial Boat Yard Park. Western end of the trail on the South Fork of the Holston River. A very nice 18.5 mile ride, they did a good job on this trail, Don’t miss it if your in the area.

Guest River Gorge Trail

Beautiful ride out & back.

June, 2018 by bjwana

As stated in previous reviews, there are plenty of benches along the way where you can stop and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. You can pretty much coast downhill all the way out, but you'll pedal every inch of the way back up. The trail is very well maintained and any washouts mentioned in previous post have been completely repaired.

Nice and Casual

June, 2018 by brokedown

Once you get out of the many street crossings the trail is very enjoyable. My wife and I rode it with our hybrids which was the perfect bike choice. The trail is wide and easy to navigate. Nice gradual climb from Elizabethton to Johnson City. The trail has that hard packed, sandy surface. That's the reason for four stars instead of five. I shouldn't be so picky. I plan to ride it again with some friends.

Spring 2018 on the Virginia Creeper Trail

May, 2018 by jerryborich

As a 60 year old man, I've wanted to do the VCT for quite some time. Last year, I got an e-bike to ride some of the hills in the Appalachian Mountains. It has made riding so enjoyable for a guy my age and since then, I ride so much more often. I have to say, it made riding up the hill from Damascus to White Top a pure pleasure and the ride back down...well that's what everyone seems to love doing. The scenery along this jewel of a trail is awesome. Don't forget to take a good camera. I'm planning to do the Abingdon, Virginia half soon. Can't wait!
