Great Northern Historical Trail

Nice recreational ride

August, 2020 by suzie.eades

We enjoyed the ride and did it with our hybrid bikes. The 2-3 miles alongside the highway was a bit loud but still on the designated path. Then you drop down and into a very nice path to the finish - we rode back to Somers and enjoyed an adult beverage at Del’s!

Great ride today

July, 2020 by vlc9802

We rode this trail from Toulon to Princeville today. It was great! The path was very good. It is mostly shaded. Excellent. We stopped in Wyoming on our way back for lunch. Ate at 111 Coffee Shop. Don’t be fooled, this is NOT just a coffee shop. The lunch was delicious. And it is decorated all with bikes! Perfect for us bikers. And check out the bathroom. Cute!!! Can’t wait to do more of the route from Princeville going south.

Great Northern Historical Trail

Hometown Ride

June, 2020 by acewickwire

Location: Kalispell, MT
Trail Condition: Very nice asphalt path for the more recently constructed trail but original/older segments are in need of maintenance. Older segment (Kalispell – Kila) lots of lateral cracks with one section of washboard.
Signage: A number of overhead Great Northern Historical trail signs. Mileage markers with some completely faded out. On new segment of trail a few directional signs. A couple of historical information signs.
Comments: Rode this on two separate days, 1st was Kalispell – Somers and then Kalispell – Kila. For a good portion of the trail both parallel a busy highway and experience road noise as a result. For some reason TrailLink map does not show the original trailhead off of Meridian Road where it crosses the train tracks. This is where I started the trail. Both routes have interesting end sections. Somers has a small museum at the end and Kila is quiet. Both routes have some small hills to climb. Recommend either route when in Kalispell.

Ridin' The GART

June, 2020 by acewickwire

This trail is a segment of the Great American Rail-Trail (GART).
Location: Frenchtown, MT
Trail Condition: Very nice asphalt path with a newly completed section of excellent condition.
Signage: None.
Comments: A new portion of the trail has recently been added to the trail. From Mill Creek Rd (east end of trail) going southeast to junction with Hwy 93 near Wye is 6 miles of new trail. It parallels the frontage road, like the original section of trail. This new section of trail does encounter a couple hills. Thus not level like the original section. Overall nice trail. Lots of clover growing along the trail and smelled good the day I rode. A new other trail users were encountered.

This is the best trail I have ever ridden!

Gateway to Glacier Trail

Uphill from Hungary Horse

September, 2019 by normanbowers

Trail is smooth and hills are not steep. Nice mountain scenery, the only downside is the traffic noise.
The trail is basically uphill going from Hungary Horse toward Glacier, so the ride back to Hungary Horse is fast and easy.

Beautiful Ride But Noisy

August, 2019 by oldertwin

I rode both south and west part way on this trail. On the westerly portion I turned back because the trail runs ride along US Hwy. 2 and the noise was bothering me. The southernly portion also runs along the busy US Hwy 93 but the noise is not so bad. I am just getting back into biking after a two year lay off and this ride was perfect.

Gateway to Glacier Trail

Lots of Hills

August, 2019 by oldertwin

I rode this trail a couple of days ago. It is very hilly so if you not used to riding hills beware. In addition, the trail is right beside a busy highway to Glacier National Park so it can be quite noisy. The scenery is beautiful and well worth the ride.

Great trail ride on asphalt.

August, 2019 by debimiller91

Started in Kalispell at halfway of trail and rode south to Somers to Flathead Lake. Sat at the lakeside awhile then went back for lunch at Somers Bay Cafe. Great food, breakfast and lunches. Round trip is 24 miles.

Gateway to Glacier Trail

Nice to be able to ride in Montana

July, 2018 by bkel

As noted, this is an 11-mike one way trail along the highway, which is busy in the summer months. It does veer off onto old route 2 a few times, past camps & resorts, tucked away from commercial route 2. Well maintained, with stunning scenery along the way, this trail suffices for our quest of “Cycling the 50” states.

Gateway to Glacier Trail

Great trail for what it is - along the highway

August, 2017 by acannefax

This is not a trail you pick for the scenery, although views along this highway are nice. The description in TrailLink is accurate, from what I can tell. I was very happy to have this trail to do. My husband needed to take a break and get some things done at our RV, which left me free to ride, and this trail was perfect. I could get in as many miles as I wanted and I did 40. It wasn't that easy - some nice long and a bit challenging hills made it interesting. If you just want a trail that will give you some nice miles this is great. I am really, really happy it was here. Thank you!
