Murfreesboro's Stones River Greenway System

Nice trail for a small city

May, 2019 by normanbowers

Nice shaded trail along Stone River with historical and environmental stops along the way. A number of restroom and drinking fountains at trail heads, which are usually in parks. A lot nicer trail than I was expecting in a small town.

I would suggest parking at Old Fort Park 1028 Golf Ln, Murfreesboro, and biking both ways. The signs are a little confusing, but one trail takes you downtown the other along the river.

Surprise Trail Stop

April, 2019 by heochief

My wife and I stopped at this trail on our travels to Florida. We stopped at this trail to get a quick ride in. We found the trail to be a great trail that offered many splendid views in a urban and country setting. The trail is flat and wider than typical. This was a gorgeous spring day and the trail was heavily traveled but well spaced with the traffic. The trail seems to be used as a connector trail. The trail is flat and very smooth paved asphalt. Great trail we will be back and use the trail for a moment to get out of the car. The trail is relatively close to the interstate.

Mountain Goat Trail

Go for the Goat, see the Tigers

Great short trail between Chattanooga and Nashville. We parked across from the DG in Monteagle. The first section is a bit “zig-zaggy” but the remaining section is very nicely shaded. At the Sewanee trailhead, we crossed the highway and spent some time/miles exploring the majestic University of the South campus. Upon returning, we lunched at the market named after the trail for some awesome post ride sandwiches; you can bike to it and beyond. I can’t wait to re-ride when the connections to Cowan & Tracy City are completed!

Great Ride From Sewanee to Monteagle

July, 2018 by edmcanally

MGT is my home trail and I’m biased. I want you to visit. If you are traveling I-24 past Monteagle, drop in and enjoy the Goat. Presently, the trail runs on the old Mountain Goat line from Sewanee to near Marion County line. It crosses the highway and runs parallel to it into Monteagle (4.7 miles.) we really enjoy the nostalgia of riding the old line. You can picture the coal train lumbering across the forested ridge line. We ride a slight incline from Sewanee to Monteagle and then coast back. I give this trail 4 Stars for two reasons: road crossings and maintenance. Nothing to do about the road crossing but be aware of them. The trail is old enough to have a few root problems affecting the asphalt. Mowing lacks a clear consistent plan. Still it’s 2/3’rds shady and quite enjoyable. A new section from Monteagle to Tracy City is presently under construction. Soon the MGT will be a destination trail.

Bridgeport Walking Trail-February 2018

February, 2018 by tltrumbull

We had a wonderful time walking the trail, seeing the old train depot and antique trains...but, our greatest thrill was encountering an active freight train on the parallel train tracks while crossing the beautiful pedestrian bridge this morning. The very friendly Conductors gave us several nice whistle blows and we enjoyed waving back at them. The walk across the Tennessee River on the old train trestle was a truly beautiful experience. Many thanks to all in Bridgeport.

Gateway Greenway

Good for Walking, Not So Good for Bikes

February, 2017 by rmheeth

This Greenway is really a path around a city park which contains a nice, extensive Memorial to Veterans. There is a nice parking lot near the middle of the trail. The greenway goes by the railroad track and under the highway overpass, going around the Veterans Memorial past various displays, memorials and extensive fountains. It is a short but great walk. For bikes, however, it is not so great. Many of the sidewalks are rather narrow, weaving around the memorials. I found no signage identifying it as a greenway or path but it is so short and in a compact area, you really can't get lost. I will go back for the walk but will leave my bike at home.

Scary & Unsafe

December, 2016 by cleonard_tl

Use to walk the Thompson Lane Trail Head often. Now the trail is so overgrown and out of control, that it is scary for women to walk alone in fear of predators hiding in weeds and bushes. Just is not a safe place anymore.

Years ago I use to walk my dog on this trail every day and admire the beauty of the river, What happened? I visited the trail after leaving the area for a few years and I cant even see the river now it is so over grown! I would love to put together a clean up crew/group to revive the view of the river!
