BMRR North Trail Description

The BMRR North Trail is a 2-mile, paved pathway that meanders through Red Mountain Park. The multi-use trail is smooth and flat as it winds through the woods.

The trail's western end is at the Venice Road entrance of Red Mountain Park, where it connects to the High Ore Line Trail. The High Ore Line Trail runs west, while the BMRR North Trail heads east through Red Mountain Park. The park also has nature trails that are better suited for hiking or mountain biking. The BMRR North Trail is not paved, and the visible roots may give some users mobility challenges. The eastern end of the trail meets the Shook Trail. Turn around to exit the park at the Venice Road entrance or try out some of the park's other trails and exit via one of the park's other entrances.

There are picnic tables, trail signage, and portable restrooms by the parking lot at the western end of the trail. The route has benches, picnic tables, trail signage, a bike repair station, and a TravelStory. Dogs are welcome on the trail as long as they remain on a leash. The park also includes Remy's Dog Park, where dogs can go off-leash. The BMRR South Trail is a dirt and gravel rail trail that also runs through the park.

There is no admission or parking fee for the park.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking is available at the Red Mountain Park Venice Road entrance (2019 Venice Rd, Birmingham).

BMRR North Trail Reviews

nice, interesting, but short

BMMR North is a pleasant trail with adequate shade, some stunning vistas of Jones Valley & beyond (imgine there would be more to see in dormant foliage). Intersting relics of mining operations. Trail appears to be true rail trail for about 1.25 miles, though trail length is list at 2.0. There is no asphalt beyond parking lot; embedded rail ties still visible in most areas. Once reaching X with Redding Trail at some an impressive structure, the trail narrows and trends toward rougher surfaced until sweeping uphill on a grassy swale to connect with BMMR South.
Connectors between the trails are more difficult than typical railtrail; Wenonah Connector is great, until surface goes rustic to jump the ridge. Both better as out & back, from Venice Rd. Better yet, park off Bessemer Super Highway in Midfield & ride the High Ore Trail; carefully cross a marked crossing at moderately busy 2 lane, and do the BMMR North & Wenonah, then back to Midfield for about a 11 mile O/B.
parked at Frankfurt Circle, road part of BMRR South, connected to BMMR North , rode to Venice Ave, reversed, took Wenonah Connector back to BMMR South for return to Frankfurt. Would not recommend the connectors i used on any bike.
