With the disused railroad running through the center of town, the city of Greenwood saw an opportunity for more than just a run-of-the-mill rail trail. They recognized it as a chance to breathe new life into the heart of the city, creating a new focal point and space for people to rest, relax and gather. The Rail Spike Park is the result of thoughtful design, featuring a smooth asphalt rail trail enhanced with tidy landscaping, trailside lighting and furniture, and a permanent pavilion which hosts a weekly farmers' market among other events. The trail parallels Johnson Street and Yazoo Avenue.
The trail sits on the former right-of-way of the C&G Railroad, which the city railbanked in 2006 when the railroad chose to reroute its corridor out of the commercial district.
Angle parking spaces are available along Johnson Street between Howard Street and the east end of the park. On the west end, there's a handful of spaces on Yazoo Avenue. The pavillion which is located on Main Street and Johnson Avenue also features bike racks.
