Haskell Rail-Trail Description

The Haskell Rail-Trail, billed as the ‘first operational rail-trail in Kansas’, spans the eastern edge of the campus of Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence. In the north, the trail connects to the Burroughs Creek Trail and Linear Park, which heads closer to downtown Lawrence.

Eventually, the trail will become an integral component of a partial loop around Lawrence: the planned construction of a new portion of the S. Lawrence Trafficway will include an eastward extension of the S. Lawrence Trafficway Trail, which will be just a couple blocks shy of the Haskell Rail-Trail’s southern endpoint.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking for the Haskell Rail-Trail is available on the campus of Haskell Indian Nations University off N. Perimeter Road.

Parking is also available at the Burroughs Creek trail connection.

Haskell Rail-Trail Reviews

Great trail

Love it but wish it was a dirt trail like before and could be extended as it’s short. Just the same, once can always go to the Wetlands from there.

Trail now paved

This section is now paved with concrete. Nice smooth ride with a few road crossings.

Paving begins soon

A paving contract has been awarded and a 10' wide mixed use upgrade that should begin soon. From the 11/18/14 Lawrence City Commission meeting minutes -

"Accept Kansas Department of Transportation grant award for the Haskell Rail Trail between 23rd Street and 29th Street. The total cost of the project is $189,575.35, with the City responsible for twenty percent (20%) or $39,900."
