The Hellbender Preserve Trail is a 0.80-mile dirt trail through its namesake Hellbender Preserve. The trail and preserve are named after the eastern Hellbender, a species of giant Salamander that is native to southeastern Ohio. This incredible amphibian can grow up to 15 inches.
About the Route
The dirt and crushed stone trail runs through a serene forested preserve. The trail is flat, and there is a small bridge over a creek and a tunnel.
Connections
The 0.8-mile Hellbender Preserve Trail is the newest link of the Great American Rail-Trail, a 3800-mile route that will one day connect Washington, D.C., and Washington State.
Brand new trail with a lot to see! Only 1.5 miles, this trail is perfect for a stroll along the stream on a nice day. It has plenty of benches in ideal spots and signage about the history of the railroad. The bridge and long tunnel are fascinating trail features that break up the forested areas. Lots of birds and wildlife. It starts at a decently sized parking lot and ends next to a road. Definitely recommend for anyone close by!
