Print Friendly MapThe Hertz Trail (also known as the North Lake Whatcom Trail) follows the eastern shoreline of Washington's fourth largest freshwater lake. The relatively flat, fine-gravel pathway traces the former Bellingham Bay and Eastern Railroad, which was used to transport coal from the Blue Canyon Mine at the south end of the lake.
An interpretive kiosk at the trailhead provides information about the railroad and the importance of the lake as a source of drinking water for nearby Bellingham. The scenic route offers moss-covered trees, ferns, picturesque waterfalls and access to beaches and the lake.
Parking access is only available from the north end of the trail in Lake Whatcom Park (3330 North Shore Drive). From Bellingham, follow North Shore Drive east to near the road's end and then follow signs to the parking lot.
Easy walk/ride. So much plant life to see.
Trail condition is average for Chet and small gravel. Has good History information. Trail currently ends at 2 miles for a wide Trike. Walkers & bikes can continue over foot bridge. Repairs to Bridge should be done soon. Noel Keller 3 Jul 14
