The Island Greenway is a scenic multiuse trail that meanders for 1.2 miles through the beautiful town of Carolina Beach on Pleasure Island, a coastal barrier island. The paved asphalt trail is smooth and wide as it winds through the woods and around a small lake.
Mike Chappell Park (501 Dow Rd S, Carolina Beach) serves as the trail's northern endpoint and has a playground, a skate park, a dog park, a basketball court, tennis courts, baseball fields, soccer fields, picnic tables, and restrooms.
From Mike Chappell Park, the trail heads south along the lower west side of Carolina Beach to the intersection of Alabama Avenue and Spot Lane. The route crosses a few streets, which provide additional access points to the trail. From north to south, the trail crosses Sumter Avenue, Spartanburg Avenue, and Ocean Boulevard/State Road 1539. South Carolina Avenue and Texas Avenue both come to a dead end at the trail.
The Island Greenway is part of the East Coast Greenway, a growing network of multiuse trails connecting 15 states along a 3,000-mile route between Maine and Florida.
Parking is available at Mike Chappell Park (501 Dow Rd S, Carolina Beach).
We usually leave from Carolina Beach State Park and cross Dow Rd and turn right to get to the trail. Using the trail and some quiet roads in the center of the island you can avoid Dow Rd altogether to get to the end where Dow Rd turns to the beach. It’s not a long trail, for sure, but it serves a great little purpose especially for the casual rider who doesn’t want to ride on Dow Rd.
