The Pioneer Trail links Bergen Park to Evergreen Lake through Elk Meadow Park. The trail can be accessed from the Bergen Park and Ride, and stretches south for about a mile before ducking under SR 74 (Evergreen Parkway) into the Elk Meadow Park. True to its name, the park is home to herds of elk and deer that graze in the open fields, as well as other wild- and bird life. Within the park, the paved trail becomes the natural surface, interestingly-named Painter’s Pause trail, parallel to SR 74. The Pioneer Trail reemerges at Bergen Peak Drive, before winding through residential and commercial areas along the highway. The trail finally comes to an end at Evergreen Lake.
There's plenty of parking along the trail. There's the Bergen Park and Ride; the Buchanan Park Recreation Center (32003 Ellingwood Trail); Lewis Ridge Trailhead in Elk Meadow Park (7557 Bergen Peak Drive) across from Lewis Ridge Road; Stagecoach Trailhead at 32391 Stagecoach Boulevard; and Evergreen Lake.
