The Walterville Canal Birding Trail is a quiet little gem of a trail, located in the unincorporated community of Walterville, just north of the McKenzie River outside Eugene, Oregon. The grass and gravel surface is perfect for jogging, dog-walking, and biking with the appropriate tires; the trail runs along the Walterville Canal and loops around the hilly landscape of the local reservoir. The reservoir once served as a pleasant fishing pond, but has now largely been emptied of water, transforming the ground into wetlands - and making it an ideal spot for observing a variety of waterfowl and other species of bird. For those in the Eugene area looking to escape into a more rural setting, the Walterville Canal Birding Trail offers an enticing option just a short drive away.
A small parking lot is available at the start of the trail, located on a road that runs west off of McKenzie Highway/State Highway 126 (the road located just north of the canal). Lane County Transit also runs a bus that services Walterville.
