West River Trail (Windham County)

gorgeous fall ride

October, 2025 by darylmarlisa

We started at the marina restaurant at the south end of the trail and rode 3.5 miles on the rail trail section, with another 2 miles on Rice Farm & Quarries roads. Beautiful vistas of the river, rock formations, changing leaves. Esp impressive was the overhead highway bridge built with long tapering multicolored stone supports, representing tree branches. Under the arched stone supports is a picnic table & patio area. A few protruding stones/tree roots need to be managed but biking is very possible on this trail and should be included in the list of options for use.

Short Extension to Sugar River Trail

September, 2025 by georgerisktaker

Short trail that is very much an extension of Sugar River trail, but without much scenery, other than the last .5 mile. The first portion of the trail that runs along the road is safe and wide, but its surface is a little soft. If you ride the Sugar River Trail, you should ride this trail as it is short, it adds to the exercise and the road portion is unique. I applaud and support all trail extensions.

Valley Trail

Rode 2.5 miles from Wilmington north on mountain tire bikes and it is doable but rough with roots and rocks. Nice bridges but missing signage in some areas, others well marked. No washout areas close to Wilmington.

Lovely birthday ride

We rode to the end of the trail, then continued on Rice Farm Rd. to the dangerous intersection. we missed the entrance to the trail on the way back, so got a good workout on some hilly spots on the road.
On the packed sand patches, keep an eye out for roots that can be a bit dicey. In some spots along the gravel sections, the gravel can be a bit loose, so pay attention to the trail.

Southern Portion

We biked from Granville to Rupert, 11 miles one way. It was an excellent ride! The trail is in great shape and parking on Water St. by the Slate Valley Museum was very convenient. I believe the trail continues another 2 miles into West Rupert. If you like gravel rides, I highly recommend this one!

Mascoma River Greenway

Short but fun

Paved. Runs through Lebanon. This trail is a must if you are going to do the Northern Rail Trail.

Toonerville Rail-Trail

Modest but very nice trail.

Did this trail in the summer of 2024. I agree with some of the previous reviewers that signage could be a little clearer but that's a MINOR concern. The ride was quite pleasant & would make a great lunch hour break for locals. Absolutely no issues with road surfaces and traffic on the nearby highway was very light that day so no competing with cars. Very short trail so make sure you have other activities planned. Visit nearby Hoyt's Landing on the CT river for a nice end of ride picnic :-)

Bog Meadow Brook Nature Trail

Better than I expected

I’m not a trail master so take this with a grain of salt. I thought the trail was pretty good. I wanted a shorter trail with some scenery and this was good for exactly that. It was starting to rain so it cut my walk short however the trail was pretty well maintained with fresh wooden mulch to cover some of the wet areas. Not a lot of wildlife other than some birds, geese and butterflies. It was very peaceful and I will go back again

Bobby Woodman Rail Trail

Could be even nicer

March, 2025 by fssn0wsh0e7

I did this as an extension of a ride down from Newport on the Sugar River Trail. I agree with the comment above about the section along Washington street by all the box stores where you are essentially riding on the verge of the highway. It doesn't seem like it would take much to fix that section up and make for a more seamless connection to the Sugar river trail. It would also be nice at the end of the trail in Claremont to give some indications to local services (food!).

We biked the entire northern half of the D&H Rail Trail to the NY state line. Was pleasantly surprised to find no ruts. Trail was mostly made up of crushed stone. It's mostly a scenic ride, I would recommend this Rail Trail.

Delaware and Hudson Rail-Trail

dog warning

September, 2023 by guamlee7

just walked the D & H trail from granville center to middle granville. really enjoyed the walk out toward middle granville but on the way back while walking through the farm (which was a delightful experience on the first trip through, seeing calves and cows) but then were charged by two pitties which attacked my dog and knocked me down. Luckily I had an umbrella and was able to get up and get away and down the trail. the dogs followed for a while but then returned to the farm. Too bad because was a very enjoyable walk until this. I just hope these two dogs dont really hurt someone....

Trail is well maintained, and an easy ride. We started out at the south end by the Marina. A couple of beautiful waterfalls along the way.
