The Cayuga Waterfront Trail is an 8 mile greenway on the edge of Lake Cayuga in Ithaca, New York. As this trail traverses the southern shore of this lake, as well as the Cayuga Inlet, it connects a number of notable attractions.
The trail starts with a loop around the Allan H. Treman State Marine Park, with views of the Cayuga Inlet lighthouse and breakwaters. The trail then turns south past the Ithaca Dog Park, Hangar Theatre, Cass Park. The trail also passes through the Ithaca Children's Garden, an exciting interactive garden with numerous attractions including a garden kitchen, bees, hens, bird habitat garden, rice paddy, wildflower meadow, and even a troll house. This impressive garden is also where the Cayuga Waterfront Trail meets the Black Diamond Trail.
Shortly after the Children's Garden, the trail crosses the Cayuga Inlet and begins to head north. This eastern section of the trail passes by the College Cree Boathouses, The Ithaca Farmer's Market (open every Sat & Sun), the Newman Municipal Golf Course, before ending in Stewart Park. Not only does Stewart Park offer spectacular views of Lake Cayuga, but also boasts a bike rental service.
There is parking along this trail at the Allen H. Treman Marine Park, Cass Park, the Ithaca Farmer's Market and Stewart Park. See TrailLink Map for more detailed information.
The Cayuga Waterfront Trail is an all asphalt trail. We were able to keep the bikes clean and my 8 year old is safe from traffic. I found that if we travel Cass Park loops by the dog park, boat docks, inlet to Farmers Market, past the city golf course to Stewart Park loop and back, it is about 10.0 miles. Sorry for the long sentence but there’s a lot to see.
You start out in a lovely park and you end in a lovely park. In the middle, figuratively speaking, there is a wonderful farmers market. If you go on a weekend then the trail has a bit of foot and bike traffic so if time and speed are important, use this trail during off hours. But for a pleasant ride it is terrific. The one down side is it is poorly marked. the signs are small and there are a number of alternate paths. signs are facing one way but not the other. But not too bad. I recommend this trail if you are looking for an easy outing with no hills and meeting nice people.
We enjoyed this ride mid morning on a July day. Meandering along the waterfront, watching kids learn to row at the park, to the marina at the NW end. Osprey platform past the Marina with fledging ospreys. Somehow we did7mikes out fledge age
