Going-to-the-Sun Road is the only road to traverse Glacier National Park. Across 50 miles it climbs up to Logan Pass and crosses the continental divide at 6,646 ft. connecting Lake McDonald and Saint Mary Lake.
For a brief spring season, the road is both plowed and closed to cars. This hiker/biker season usually falls around May/June but the dates change each year. The road is closed to cars between Lake McDonald Lodge/Avalanche Creek and Rising Sun and there are shuttles that take hikers and bikers between the Apgar Visitor Center and the closed road portions.
If you were to ride the whole route between the Lake McDonald Lodge and Rising Sun, it is 32.5 miles. Because there is no return route, most cyclists do out-and-back journeys to the road's highpoint at Logan Pass. To reach Logan Pass it is 21 miles from the Lake McDonald Lodge (42 round-trip) and 11.5 miles from Rising Sun (23 round-trip).
Climbing up the road is incredibly taxing, but coming down, cyclists will often face wind, snowmelt and other freezing conditions - so be prepared with warm clothing.
Parking for Going-to-the-Sun Road is available at Lake McDonald Lodge and the Apgar Visitor Center.
