The Highway 1 Trail is an urban sidepath trail that follows a stretch of the highway through southwestern Iowa City, providing a useful commuting alternative to the busy roadway. The trail, while little more than a wide sidewalk itself, also serves as a link between the lovely Willow Creek Trail and the Iowa River Corridor Trail, giving residents of the nearby neighborhoods a convenient means of traveling between two of the area's premier trails.
The trail runs along the north side of the highway from Sunset Street in the west (where sidewalks can connect you to the start of the nearby, more scenic Willow Creek Trail) to Orchard Street, where it continues along the west side of the street for a short distance up to Benton Street. Just a block away from that end of the trail, you can pick up the Iowa River Corridor Trail along the river. While this sidepath trail might not provide much natural beauty, it serves a purpose in the city's trail system - the city also hopes to enhance that purpose by extending the trail further west to Mormon Trek Boulevard at some point in the future.
No dedicated trail parking is available, but businesses along the highway have lots that trail users may avail themselves of; be sure to follow any posted parking signs and regulations.
