Allegan County’s Interurban Trail runs north-south through the City of Wayland. The trail follows a former interurban railroad corridor through the heart of the community between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo. Trains between the two cities ceased running on the line in 1929, but the corridor was preserved intact for overhead electricity transmission.
The trail’s surface is largely unimproved, consisting of a mixture of dirt, grass and gravel. In the future, the city plans on improving the trail with a crushed limestone surface, trail signage, benches, restrooms, trash cans and bike racks.
A short paved trail—also known as the Interurban Trail—is open on the same corridor farther north in the City of Wyoming.
Parking for the Interurban Trail can be found adjacent to Wayland’s skate park on Pearl Street.
