Anyone on the James River Trail is up for a challenge: Only 1 mile paved along its 4.3-mile length; the rest of the surface is primitive In the spring, it can get pretty muddy. It partly sits on an old railroad bed so it has sections that are flat, but other sections range from moderate to fairly steep. But if you are in the mood for a quiet, scenic excursion that’s off the beaten path, then this is also the place.
Note that the trail has a gap between Country Drive and E. Side Drive.
At the trail’s south end, you can park at the Rotary Nature Area on 7th Street and Burleigh Street in Yankton.
