Situated on bluffs north of the Missouri River in the southeastern corner of South Dakota, the small city of Vermillion has plenty of natural charm and beautiful surroundings, thanks to the Mighty Missouri nearby and the smaller Vermillion River that forms the southern boundary of the city - and one of the best ways to experience the area's natural beauty is through the short but sweet Vermillion River Trail. Running for just shy of two miles along its namesake waterway, this paved trail provides an excellent pathway for jogging, cycling, or casual strolls along the riverbank.
The trail begins in the west at an unassuming entrance just off of West Broadway Street, just south of the railroad tracks, and continues along the river as it winds its way south and east. The trail passes through Cotton Park, a small recreation site with restrooms and picnic areas, and continues via an underpass for a final rail-with-trail section where the trail runs parallel between the still-active historic railroad tracks and the tranquil river. Residents and visitors alike should be sure to hit-up this charming trail if they find themselves with some spare time on a nice day in Vermillion.
Parking and restrooms are available at Cotton Park, located on South Dakota Street south of the intersection with Chestnut Street.
