Lick Run Greenway begins in downtown Roanoke and heads north just over 4 miles to end between Huff Lane Park and Valley View Mall. Along the way, the paved pathway traverses two parks: Washington Park and Brown Robertson Park. Both parks offer picnic tables, basketball courts, and playgrounds. Near its northern end, the trail passes Round Hill Elementary School on its east side and a busy shopping area to the west.
Parking is available mid-trail in Washington Park (1610 Burrell St. NW).
Lick Run is my favorite among all the Roanoke Greenway, but it is a bit short for a biker. Nice hill climb though. I usually begin at Wiley Drive on the Roanoke River Greenway and ride to Norwich then to Black Dog Salvage and on down 10 Street to 460. There is no bike trail on Orange Avenue, but there is unused sidewalk alongside the heavy traffic. Then to Lick Run and to the Mall!
More signage would have been nice but getting a bit lost was all part of the fun. It’s ALOT of uphill if you start downtown. I started at Valley View... parked near Best Buy. We took two cars to avoid the uphills on the return. Just beautiful!
They are working in it. Has a lot of potential. Great to run on. I would wait to bike until they finish.
I had a very bad (like, emergency room kind of bad) crash on this greenway near washington park. they have allowed roots to push up the asphalt in a section that is shaded and has poor visibility; none of the damaged area is marked. the city of roanoke should be ashamed of the lack of maintenance. it's a hazard and I would avoid any trail maintained by the city.
