The Longboat Key Bike Trail spans the entire barrier island along the Gulf of Mexico Dr. This bike trail provides tourists the perfect car-free route to navigate the beaches and other attractions of the region. At its widest point, Longboat Key is only 1 mile wide, so from nearly point along this bike trail, public beach access is only a short side street away.
Most of the island's private resorts are along this route in addition to yacht clubs, two golf courses and a variety of restaurants and cafes. The Bike Trail also passes by Bayfront Park which has a kayak launch, playground, dog park, pickleball/tennis courts and indoor recreation center.
Parking is available at Overlook Park. See TraillLink Map for more detailed directions.
Be very careful on this ride. There is minimal separation from vehicles, and there are lots of commercial vehicles, like lawn care, pool, care, remodeling, etc. Even though you were close to the water, you rarely see water.

The gulf is gorgeous however. There are a few spots along the way to eat/drink, if you’re interested. Parking at Overlook Park was ample. after the ride. The city
