Montaño Trail Description

Allowing cyclists and pedestrians to safely cross over the Corrales Drain and the mighty Rio Grande, the Montaño Trail helps provide a multi-use connection to link the large suburban neighborhoods in northwest Albuquerque with older, more historic sections of the city - such as the Los Poblanos Ranch.

The trail begins in the west at the Pueblo Montaño Picnic Area and Sculpture Park; the park lies on scrubland that was the site of a major fire in 2003 and was transformed with the help of Mark Chavez, one of the firefighters who fought the blaze, into a recreation site with wooden sculptures that pay tribute to the history and culture of the Albuquerque area. Heading east along the side of Montaño Road, the trail narrows a bit on the bridge over the river but still stays wide enough to accommodate bikes and pedestrians - across the water, a nifty trail interchange allows you to get on one of the gem's of the area's trail network, the Paseo del Bosque Trail.

The trail continues along the side of the road for about another half-mile on a pleasant tree and fence-lined corridor, with benches placed along the way at various points, before coming to an end at Rio Grande Boulevard. From there, bike lanes and sidewalks along the roads can carry you to any number of destinations within the historic core of Albuquerque.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking is available at the western end of the trail at the trailhead in the Pueblo Montaño Picnic Area, located on Mirandela Street just south of Montano Road.
