Mount Airy Rail-Trail Description

The Mount Airy Rail-Trail will one day span nearly 4 miles across the town of Mount Airy and through a scenic, wooded area. The first completed section of the trail covers a half mile and is surfaced with crushed stone; it connects Watkins Park to Main Street shops and restaurants. A future section will head west from Main Street and another section will head east, crossing Route 27 and connecting to Watersville Road.

The trail is sometimes referred to as the Old Main Line Trail, as it runs along a former B&O railroad dating back to 1838. Passenger service ended on the line in the 1950s and a volunteer group has been working to covert the corridor to a trail.

Parking and Trail Access

Park at Watkins Park (615 Center St, Mt Airy, MD) or along Main Street to enjoy this trail. From Main Street, walk eastward past the historic B&O train station.

Mount Airy Rail-Trail Reviews

Parked only to find a trail closed sign and some construction equipment on it. This is the center street end. The park end was blocked due to a long line of cars for a recycle event.

Nice, easy walk through interesting area

This is a simple and easy stroll through a very interesting area. There are some really interesting rocks and trees along the way and plenty of squirrels and birds. The old tracks are scenic and once the trail is completed it will be even better I think.
