Oneida Rail Trail Description

The first mile of the nearly 12-mile planned Oneida Rail Trail opened in September 2014 between Hubbard Place and Lenox Avenue on the west side of Oneida. The trail runs through woodlands on an old corridor once used by the New York Central’s West Shore Railroad. A sign at the Hubbard Place trailhead celebrates the segment’s status as the first component of the future expansive network.

Another half-mile segment, disconnected from the trail's first mile, opened in 2016. It runs between Seneca Street and Sayles Street and passes Oneida High School on the way.

When complete, the rail-trail system will use three former railroad corridors to provide access to much of the community, as well as a connection to the existing Erie Canalway Trail. A roughly 6-mile loop via the bisecting corridors will also provide a popular recreation route around the city.

Parking and Trail Access

Parking for the Oneida Rail Trail is available at the western trailhead on Hubbard Place. From downtown Oneida, take Lenox Avenue/State Route 365A southwest to Genesee Street/SR 5 and turn right. Then take the first right onto Hubbard Place. The trailhead is located just south of W. Elm Street.

Oneida Rail Trail Reviews

Amazing trail that has come such a long way!

Hidden Gem

We started at the trailhead then asked over the bridge toward Wampsville. We stopped at the sheriffs office which was about 1/2mile down the path.the trail is crushed stone and passes wooded areas, the creek and some fields. We will be back to explore more. Only gave it four stars because it is dog friendly but has not trash receptacles and because there is only parking for four vehicles at the trailhead.

very nice!

Lovely path for a bike ride/walk/run! Away from the traffic and in nature. The path was crushed stone but very smooth! If you park on Hubbard you could choose one way for a shorter route (1.5 miles out and back) if you had little ones or the other if you wanted a full 2 miles (out and back) you could go the other way!

stone dust/paved from Oneida to Wampsville-beautiful railroad bridge

Stone dust trail installed in 2019-paved section with kiosk in downtown Oneida-stone dust installed from Oneida to Wampsville with a beautiful rehabilitated railroad bridge. Connects with the Empire trail in Wampsville as well is the paved Lenox Rail Trail to Canastota. Updates on trail improvements: The Oneida Rail Trail triangulates the city of Oneida -11.3 miles -3 old rail beds. the

No crushed stone, just muddy grass

A little difficult to maneuver a road bike on muddy grass. There is no crushed stone, just grass. We got as far as we could before the mud got out of control. Was a waste of a drive. We could have just found an empty corn field and had as much fun.
