The South Trail stretches over 2 miles between Ballina Rd. and New Woodstock in Cazenovia, New York. The trail sits on the former right-of-way of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. The rail-trail takes users through woodland and farmland, with rustic railroad bridges over the two waterways that intersect the trail. The Chittenago Creek bridge is a historic trestle bridge. Walkers, bikers, snowshoers, cross-country skiers and fishermen can freely use the pathway. Equestrians are welcome, but require a permit.
The South Trail is managed by the Cazenovia Preservation Foundation, which oversees 13 miles of trail in Cazenovia.
The trail is accessible via any of the cross-streets: from north to south, Ballina, Thompson or Delhi Road.
You can park at the southern end, at the New Woodstock Lumber parking area (Railroad St, New Woodstock).
I tried to ride the South Cazenovia Rail Trail in early June 2013. Unfortunately, the rail-trail has some extremely wet spots in it, edge to edge of the railroad cut. It's more of a snowmobile trail, really. I can't see how any wheeled vehicle, or even pedestrians could make it the length of the rail-trail. And don't even ask me about the mosquitoes. All those puddles make it mosquito city.
