Steel Bridge Riverwalk Description

Portland's Steel Bridge across the Williamette River was built in 1912 and is the second-oldest vertical lift bridge still in operation in North America. Over time, the railroad bridge has become more multimodal, with the upper decks accommodating car traffic and light rail, and freight rail and bike-ped users occupying the lower deck. The cantilevered bike path was added to the bridge in 2001, giving cyclists and pedestrians a safe alternative to the narrow sidewalks on the upper deck, while connecting to popular walking paths on either side of the river. The riverwalk connects the Eastbank Esplanande to the Waterfront Bike Path and offers views of the river and the Portland skyline along the way.
