Wilson Creek has always been a fundamental part of McKinney history. When Collin County was created, the Texas legislature determined that each county seat had to be within three miles of the center of the county. In 1846, there was a vote to move the county seat to either McKinney or Sloan's Grove. However, Wilson Creek and other waterways faced severe flooding, preventing Sloan's Grove voters from going to the polls. Because of the flooding at Wilson Creek, McKinney was declared the county seat. Now, Wilson Creek hosts a 6.5 mile greenway that connects residents to parks, neighborhoods and other amenities.
The trail starts in Bonnie Wenk Park, which has an amphitheater, accesible playground, dog park, fishing pond and fitness court. The trail then exits the park and follows along the meandering Wilson Creek, past the Al Ruschhaupt Soccer Complex and the Alex Clark Memorial Disc Golf Course, before ending in Towne Lake Park, where it takes a loop around the lake. Towne Lake Park has volleyball courts, a disc golf course, fishing pier, horseshoe courts, and playground.
In June 2023, Wilson Creek Greenbelt was declared a National Recreation Trail by Secretary of the Interior, Deb Haaland.
There is parking available at Bonnie Wenk Park (2996 Virginia Parkway), Al Ruschhaupt (2701 N Brook Dr.), and Towne Lake Park (140p5 Wilson Creek Parkway). See TrailLink Map for more information.
