Air Line State Park Trail

Construction Update - South

December, 2016 by martinip

Was in East Hampton briefly yesterday - it looks as though work is now underway to extend the trail west from the center of East Hampton to Alden's Crossing. Grading had been done and there were new railings on the footbridge east of Alden's Crossing. The next segment will be from Alden's Crossing to the Portland town line, with Portland also beginning work to build out its portion of the trail.

East Bay Bike Path

Love this trail, but

December, 2016 by rectrike

When it's crowded the traffic patterns are crazy because RI has this crazy rule about walkers on the the left and bikes on the ride. That would be just perfect if the paths were one-way, which they aren't. So the oncoming walkers are coming at you in your lane if you are biking, and when you are passing you are cycling coming up on walkers from their backsides and some cyclists have to go 25 mph no matter how crowded, and throw into the mix bikers and walkers going in the opposite direction and then to add to the confusion about a 1/3 of the trail users don't follow the rule and you can't really be sure if they do or don't...CHAOS!!

But I love RI bike trails anyway!

Southern New England Trunkline Trail

December 2016 Status Update

December, 2016 by 23rock

The 3-1/2 mile section in Blackstone, Millville, and Uxbridge that the state contractors have been working on is now complete and open. There are parking lots at Blackstone Depot (off of Canal St.), Central St., Millville, and Adams St., Uxbridge. The now complete trail section extends from just south of St. Paul St. in Blackstone to Adams St. (just before Rte. 146A) in Uxbridge. Very nice. The project also includes a playground at Old Mendon St. in Blackstone where the Friendly Market is adjacent for refreshments.

Also, the Route 126 tunnel in Bellingham is now complete and very nice. In November, DCR employees and FBRTC volunteers cleared 0.3 miles of the trail west from Fox Run Road to a gas line crossing in Bellingham. The surface is still rough.

As to the Castle Hill Way situation, DCR owns an trail easement on the mile or so of right of way from Main St. to Farm St. in Blackstone. This easement is on file with the Worcester County registry of deeds. The condo association owns the surface of the western 1/2 mile, the town of Blackstone owns the eastern 1/2 mile. But, the issue with dogs is that some owners do not clean up after their animals. This is also a continuing issue on the stone dust section between Center St. and Lake St. in Bellingham. So folks resent this. If you do not like the negative attitudes, you only have other dog owners to blame.

Now that the new trail is open, a description of how to span the remaining gap is in order.

Going east from the Depot parking area in Blackstone: Go down the entrance driveway to Canal St. Turn right and follow to St. Paul St. Turn left and follow St. Paul St. past the town offices and across the river to the traffic light at Main St. Turn right and follow Main St. to Castle Hill Way just after the CVS store. Turn left and follow Castle Hill Way to where the pavement curves right. Continue straight ahead through gate on to trail.

Going west, at the end of Castle Hill Way, turn right on Main St. and follow to the first traffic light. Turn left on St. Paul St. and follow to just short of the overpass. Turn right on to Canal St. and follow to the parking lot entrance just before the river bridge. Turn left and enter the parking lot with the trail on the far side. Turn right on to the trail.

Washington Secondary Bike Path

A great ride

November, 2016 by rbsorensen

I live in Cranston and have ridden this trail many times. It has some very picturesque areas, in particular, the mills in Warwick, the Coventry Greenway, and the trestle trail. It's length is very good - doing a round trip gives you 38 miles of riding.

People call this the West Bay trail - never heard of the "Washington Secondary Bike Path". Unlike the start of the East Bay trail in Providence, it is easy to park at the start or along the route at either end.

However, there are a few areas that need work. Portions of the trail in West Warwick are in great need of resurfacing (there are a number of large frost heaves), and the Cranston trail needs resurfacing in some areas as well, as it is aging.

Air Line State Park Trail

Airline Trail - North

October, 2016 by CW4

I started at South Brook ST just west of Route 6. The surface of the trail was improved but with rough rocky gravel (1") on the surface. There was 3 1/2 miles of that, then it changed to a hard packed surface that was fun and easy to ride. I went the remaining 7 miles to Promfret Station, at the Route 169 crossing. From there it was back to the start, just over 11 miles. It was a very pretty ride except for the rough gravel at the start and end of my trip.

The remaining trail to Windham is in fine shape as I have done it on another trip. It is about 6 miles to the Route 6 crossing and another 2.5 to the Frog Bridge in Willimantic.

I hear that a sewer line is to be installed within the last 3 miles of the trail right-of-way in 2017 or 2018. That will complete the trail to the Quinnibaug River in Putnam.

Southern New England Trunkline Trail

SNETT S. Main St., Bellingham to route 122 Blackstone

October, 2016 by phmaddnes

Be advised that the last half-mile from 122 got to the gate is no dogs allowed you will be accosted by many old people if you have your dog with you. I tried to explain that the map shows this as part of the S and E TT trail but they would have no part of it.

Putnam River Trail

Nice But Noisy

October, 2016 by ctbiker_tl

This trail is perfect for families or anyone wanting to walk, run, or bike, in a safe place.
It has a nice dog park, a bike repair station, picnic tables, benches, canoe launch, and other things that make this place very inviting. I love how it follows the river with scenic views.
The town seems to be committed to expanding and improving the trail, although the picnic table need some work.
The one drawback is the road is too close and has very heavy traffic and noise!
I guess we can't have it all :-)

Such a beautiful trail. Very well maintained. Do the round trip and you get to see beautiful scenery both ways. So many places to stop and take in the views. Thanks to RI for funding and maintaining such a recreational treasure.

Moosup Valley State Park Trail

Not a bike trail

September, 2016 by drb1972

Attempted to ride this on September 28, 2016, It is a disaster. The first half mile or so is paved. The trail then intersects a rode and disappears. We rode around for a while and then asked a local resident for info. He directed us around an old building to where we eventually found the trail. There are no signs anywhere on the entire trail!! Once we got back on the trail, it was very narrow and and full of rocks for a while, then it turned swampy, then got wider, but had the roller coaster effect from too much ATV usage. Don't bother trying to ride this on any bike. Walk it instead.
