Grant Wood Trail (Linn County Segment)

Rustic, quiet, partially abandoned, still enjoyable !

January, 2017 by sneaky pete

You may not want to try this on a narrow-tired road bike, the surface is largely either turf, sand, or rocky turf :)

The Westernmost segment is about 3.2 miles long, somewhere in the middle there is maybe 50-75 yards of boggy (wet) grass from a spring, your tires may cut in a little.

It's about .7 miles of surface roads to the Center segment, which is about 2.3 miles long.

The Easternmost segment appears to have been abandoned. The TrailLink map shows the West end of this segment beginning at Alderman Rd, but, I don't think that the trail is accessible there unless you ride a fat bike and enjoy serious boon-docking. There -is- access to the Easternmost segment at Linn Grove Rd, (about 3.3 miles of Gravel roads from the East end of the Center segment), but, it's only passable going East, and then only for about .25 miles of nearly knee-high grass, until it dead-ends into a fence.

Grant Wood Trail (Linn County Segment)

A different kind of ride.

November, 2016 by mummer005

A great trail if you want to try a more primitive bike ride.I used a mountain bike and glad I did. This is mostly a grass trail with a gravel rut to run on,I saw a few walkers with dogs but no other bikers. It has great potential! Rode 1st 2 segments starting from Highway 13 going east and ran out time as I averaged about 8 mph because it's a little slower going.A cool change of pace from the normal Cedar Rapids paved trails!

Cedar Valley Nature Trail

Cedar Valley Trail

October, 2016 by trailsguy88

This is a great trail for novice riders, or those getting into shape. It's an old rail trail, so it's flat. It's very scenic and a nice ride. There is trail damage from a recent flood and a section near Waterloo is completely washed out. It's closed there, but you can get through if you can carry your bike. I did almost 27 miles and greatly enjoyed it!

Hoover Nature Trail (Morning Sun)

Good morning Mr Hoover

September, 2016 by titanic1

Just east of town, there is dedicated parking by the town garage. Some railroad structures remain. You can ride a couple miles north on partly shaded trail. The path also goes a half mile south on grass covered gravel to the highway. The three mile segment running south from Columbus Junction not far from this section is very grassy and had some trees down. The Iowa State bike map shows it open.

Kewash Nature Trail

Kewash Trail

July, 2016 by sundog70

Nice gravel and dirt trail, flat grade. First half between Washington and West Chester often under trees lining the trail. Freshly laid gravel in first 3-4 miles outside Washington was a bit thick at times and bogged me down even with 700x38 tires meant for such trails. Main objection is lack of services outside Washington, particularly water. West Chester has very nice trail side park, but no water. Pump behind the shelter but it was off and this was early June. Trail end in Keota was disappointing and ugly, ending confusingly in the middle of a co-op, tho nice golf course next door. If any facilities nearby I didn't see them. Two bottles of water and ran out at last 7 miles of return trip, so may want to take three if riding full trail round trip. Overall nice scenery and worth the trip.

Kewash Nature Trail

A fun trail ride

July, 2016 by johndsevers

My wife and I rode the entire length of the Kewash trail from Washington to Keota and back. The paved section was a little bumpy in places but not too bad. Would have been better if it had been swept of leaves and sticks. Once on the unpaved section it was a lot smoother though a good game of "pick up sticks" would have made it much better. There were places where if it was wet it could have caused us some grief but only had to walk one short section which was sort of steep with a little mud. Maybe 20 or 30 feet with a 6 foot section of mud with a gravel path to walk through. Someone braver than me probably could ride right through it. Not trying to scare anyone, the trail is not perfect but we had a great time really enjoyed ourselves and will definitely ride it again.By the way, we both rode on 23mm tires and had no problems.

Hoover Nature Trail (Oasis to West Branch)

Timeless

October, 2014 by joshua.s.hotchkin

This is an absolutely wonderful trail. The path itself, the trees and the bits of old railroad memorabilia make this a trip through time as well as beautiful rolling hills (although the trail itself is flat). It lends itself wonderfully to the fall season and I look forward to concocting spooky stories about the trail to entertain my nieces on future bike rides.
