Nice bike and walking trail between two bodies of water. Will definitely return.
My wife enjoy riding this bike path. Very peaceful with many scenic views and nice park to picnic in towards the end.

I've ridden all sections in Southbridge, Sturbridge and Brimfield. The last is most extensive as it allows several different routes in the same area. The surface runs from gravel to loose crushed stone to grass and mud depending on the area as well. Inexperienced or older riders may find some parts of the Brimfield trails difficult. But if one takes their time there are some marvelous water views of the Quinebog River and adjoining marshes on that end of the trail to enjoy. The Southbridge/Sturbridge end of the trail allows a 4 mile plus run from Westville Dam out to the Calcutt Bridge and back. Adding in the Westville Community Trail in the Westville Reservation (a narrow and winding one that runs the woods on the east side of the river) adds another .75 miles to the route approximately.

Work on the 1/4 mile section in East Hampton from under Route 66 to the finished 2.5 mile Portland section continues to be delayed. The boardwalk is proving a harder task than I would have expected.
Portland has announced that it will begin to design trail improvements from the current end at camp Ingersoll toward Portland's center. I expect a year of design and land rights issues before work will start.
Rode this whole trail today, on a beautiful sunny winter day, and it was well-maintained with beautiful views of the water. Two bridges are currently under construction, but the detours are well-marked and don’t detract from the whole ride. Highly recommended!
On Feb. 17, 2020, I walked from Smith Street, East Hampton west for 2.9 miles through the tunnel under Rt. 66 where the improved section ends. This section has a good surface of stone dust. There is only 0.25 mile gap between the final 0.7 mile section in East Hampton where that newer segment connects to the 2.3 mile long trail in Portland. There are plans to build a boardwalk through this section to make the connection, as the trail is a running stream with several inches of water.
The trail has a slight break at Main Street that is a bit confusing to navigate. When heading west, turn right on Main Street, cross Main Street at the light, and walk through the parking lot in front of the fire department building to pick up the trail.
At the eastern end of the trail, the bridge over the Willimantic River in Willimantic on the Hop River State Rail Trail received a new deck in 2019 and opened to the public in September 2019, thus making a direct connection to the Air Line Trail.
A Great Blue Heron, a million swans, mallards, gentle slopes, complimentary curves all help make this my favorite local walk. Rhode Island trails seem to want us to walk on the left and ride on the right. It’s counterintuitive to most walkers and sets up confusion and frustration on the trail. There are some signs. But quite a few are missing and there are no directions in the lane. That’s my only complaint and it’s minor.
The trails in Vernon are among the most maintained of all trails in Central and Easter CT. There's plenty of parking along the trails which gives you easy access. The scenery is amazing including bridges, side paths, and tunnels.
It's too bad that so many of these trails don't allow the use of snowmobiles and off-road motorcycles. I see a lot of people complain about motored vehicles, but it really makes no sense to me. To me, both activities are equal and should have equal access. You have one group of people who enjoy hiking and biking, and another group of people who enjoy dirt-biking and snow-mobiling. Why does the hiking biking community always win out? Why do they get priority over the other group? Are the activities we enjoy less valuable/important than the activities you enjoy? I'm not whining, but I don't think it's fair. There is no logical reason to allow one activity and restrict the other. It's done out complete bias against and inconsideration for the preferred activities of other groups of people. If noise, speed etc. is the issue, then set rules regulating these things, don't ban the activity altogether.These trails should be open to all applicable activities, with a set of rules allowing everyone to enjoy the trails with each other.
I went on this trail as a runner. The first half mile is nicely paved and was very nice. After that though the trail was not very runner friendly. Lots of water hazards, loose rocks, up down ruts and off road vehicle traffic. The trail itself is beautiful with very few road crossings. I could see having a good time as a mountain biker but not great for running.
