We parked our car in the lot on Garfield Avenue, and rode 19 miles from the Cranston end to Summit, where we ate lunch at the General Store before heading back to Cranston. Compared to my home bike path, the heavily traveled Minuteman Bikeway, the Washington Secondary Path was mellllllowww, on a GORGEOUS June Sunday. I kept expecting crowds. None, just the occasional friendly rider, who usually waved and said hello.
As noted, the Coventry half is in better shape than the bumpier Cranston side. There are several ice cream places, ballfields, parks, and water views. I found porta potties between the tennis courts and ballfields near the Horgan School in West Warwick and one in a small park towards Coventry. No restroom at the trailhead so plan ahead.
I grew up in Chelmsford and remember the Abandoned rails here. since conversion I been riding this trail to catch a movie in Lowell grab food in Acton go to my gym in town. fitness rides and pleasure rides. I explore the many parks it passed thru. I go fishing. this is perfect for a man who had to give up driving for impairment reasons. now I stay fit all the time and enjoy it.
Rode from the Coventry Trailhead to Cranston on a warm, sunny day. Overall the trail is pretty nice with shading from nearby trees. There are some sections that need paving repair due to bumps forming in the pavement (probably nearby tree roots). Most of the roadway intersections were fine, but may be challenging on a busy day. One intersection is notably "bad" due to its layout (Providence St (Rt-33) & Toll Gate Rd (Rt-115)). This may be a good place to get off your bike and walk this intersection (see the google street view).
We didn't have time to try out the western end of this trail, but may come back in the future for it.
But too busy in a warm spring weekend. Some stretches are narrow and poorly maintained.
The new section is complete! You can now ride from Acton to Lowell - the Acton end of trail is amazing! There is a bike shop right on the trail in Acton - they have a bathroom open to riders! Tons of parking options on this end of trail.
I discovered this winter that the Hudson side of the trail (unlike the Marlborough side) has no snow and ice removal. We went there to walk several times this winter and it was impassable.
Was a nice walk oalong the Pawtuxet River, with lots of mills, artifacts, and historical scenery along the way. The River was really flooded, so we couldn't walk around the mill. This mile long route needs to be a little more maintained, but nothing major. There were only a few shrands of glass along the pathway. This used to be the old Trestle Trail, and Train Rails. It was interesting to learn thattrains used to travel along the path. It has lots of hidden gems, even waterfalls, not viewable from the road. I will definitly be coming back here with my camera and metal detector. One last thing, the mill has been vandalized by kids, but is overall safe. You are not permitted to use the insides, exept a big section was preserved into a basketball indoor court. This trail includes walking, jogging, dirt biking, biking, cross-country skiing, and lots more outdoor activities.
The trail leads down to the ocean and it’s just a gorgeous view! Not a lot of parking, but never overcrowded.
I ride this trial several times a week. There are several access points now that the new section is open. The whole trial is very well maintained and mostly tree lined. Lots of places to stop and relax. The new section is wider with more benches. The NARA pond area is a very nice diversion. The major street crossings all have crossing lights. It is a gem of a trail!
Contact with the Hop River design team has developed some news on the last remaining undeveloped area on the Hop River Trail. The section on the Windham side of the Willimantic River is under construction. A late summer opening is anticipated. This work will allow traffic over the Willimantic River from the current end at Mackey's Ag. store. A parking area is also part of the work.
The Trail from the Columbia town line to Kings Road (the current end of the developed trial) will be under design late this year. Bids, construction and all that stuff pushes the completion into 2021.
So late this summer, with a MT bike, you will be able to cross the river from Windham and follow the unimproved rail bed to Flanders Road, turn right to Kings Road and get back on the improved trail, That's less than a mile of off trail and local road.
