Cheese Country Recreation Trail

Tough but doable

September, 2020 by mikenue

Date of ride: 09/20/2020 Bike: hybrid with 42mm tires The Cheese Country trail, as other reviews state, is not a relaxing ride. You have to work for every mile. The gravel is large and there are lots of soft patches. I rode on a weekend so there was quite a bit of ATV traffic. All of the riders were respectful and slowed down to pass, but they kicked up a lot of dust. The 47 miles from Mineral Point to Monroe took 6 hrs. The scenery is nice, but you won’t get to enjoy it much as you’ll be focusing on the trail. If you are looking for a pleasant cerusged limestone trail

Military Ridge State Trail

Scenic

September, 2020 by marxdm

I did this trail twice to see what I missed. Mount Horeb is where I started the second time. Bustling with people there. Seems uphill headed towards Dodgeville. Winds thru a town. Woodsy but also watch out for sand! Nice part about Mount Horeb is the bathrooms were open and clean!

Galena River Trail

Lovely shady ride. OK for road bikes

August, 2020 by wilsonae

A stunning afternoon and my first time riding around Galena. Hopped the trail from the Depot parking lot (signage is a bit lacking but the access is on the SE corner of the lot by the boat launch.

Absolutely smashing ride all the way to Aiken (they seem to have opened up the preserve so there were a few extra miles). Trail is shady and pretty good, mostly flat with a few small hills. Only saw 3 other bikers the whole length. No kids, no runners, very private. It's finely packed gravel so my road bike was okay and there were no moments of alarm. A section heading south follows a paved road but there do not seem to be many cars or other trail users.

The other end of the parking lot by the actual depot (cute little restaurant called Otto's right there; looks very popular) starts the short end of the trail. Runs flat and is completely out in the open and along the river. Stunning day, great scenery.

Would do it again in a heartbeat. Got in a good 13-mile round trip.

Heritage Trail

August, 2020 by fkennerson

I rode this trail from Sageville to Farley and back for a total of 41 miles. I exited at Farley and rode through the town and re-entered the trail at Boge Road for the return ride. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the trail and all it's beauty. It was as though I was riding on a paved trail. I'm from Southern California and currently on a motorhome trip visiting relatives in the area. I highly recommend that anyone traveling through the area take the time to ride any portion of this trail.

Well maintained wide crushed limestone trail with a few gentle upgrades good for all levels of riders. Beautiful tree canopies, rustic bridges, and streams. Many people access points from Dubuque to Dyersville

Galena River Trail

Nice trail along Galena River

August, 2020 by csyke_tl

This is a pretty trail with a few gentle hills but mostly flat and tree lined. Start in the parking lot by the train depot and head south for several miles along the river toward the Mississippi. Or head north for a couple miles. Watch out for walnuts in the fall.

This 26 mile trail is beautiful for running and biking. It follows a small river valley over many bridges with great scenery. It is a popular trail for fitness enthusiasts and families alike.

Cheese Country Recreation Trail

Your gravel bike can handle it

August, 2020 by would.i.were

Rode from Monroe to Mineral Point on a gravel bike loaded down with camping gear and it was just fine. It was a weekday; other traffic on trail was minimal. Some really pretty segments right along a gently-gurgling Pecatonica, other segments a slog, but that tends to be the case on any rail-trail. I did not experience any of the very uncomfortable conditions other bike travelers have reported - maybe a product of the weather, or it being a weekday, or the trail association doing a good job with upkeep. Either way, don't feel like a mountain bike or fat bike is necessary, and if you're concerned about ATV traffic go on a weekday.

Grant Wood Trail (Linn County Segment)

Peaceful, but not perfect

June, 2020 by sciclone

The first two segments of the trail between Highway 13 and Springville Road are well-maintained, pretty straight, and void of much in elevation change. The last segment of trail is requires riding a section of highway with a narrow gravel shoulder and a section of gravel road. When you get to the last segment of the trail (between Alderman Road and Martelle), you will find an unmaintained trail with vegetation growing waiste-high.it is obvious that no one has touched this part of the trail in 2020.

Clinton Discovery Trail

Great Urban Trail

June, 2020 by estimatehub

This is a very fun trail ride through Clinton. We only rode the north half from downtown, so i can't comment on the south stretch to Camanche. Big parking lot and nice restrooms on 4th Ave, adjacent to the trail. From this location the trail is up on the levy and travels on it for a good stretch. Trail mileage markers are 3' high blue and white lighthouses, which is a nice touch. The trail is pretty well marked other than one spot at Grant St and 25th Ave where it indicates to go right on Grant. This is a dead-end and you need to go one more block to McKinley before making the turn. There's a pretty long and steep uphill (northbound) before reaching Eagle Point Park, but it's worth the trouble. The park is awesome! Make sure to ride the one-way through all of it. Great look-outs of the river and also, more restrooms. The park does not plunge down to the river, so don't fear a steep uphill to get back out. About 11 miles round trip from downtown and all paved. We had a great time!

Great River Trail

Savanna to Thompson

May, 2020 by svalaika

Great smooth flat ride - our tandem was cruising! I agree with other posts, there’s a small section at the start that is buggy- lots of gnats. Bring sunglasses! It was cool and overcast but if it were a sunny day, bring sunscreen too!
