Ashuelot Recreational Rail Trail

good ride but minimal pavement

June, 2021 by richmedcraft

I was a first time user and started from the trailhead near Keene State after parking in the shopping center lot on Emerald St. The pavement was done after the first 0.5 mile and then after the bridge over the highway the trail became packed dirt/stone. It has been dry so the going was fine and the trail is relatively smooth. At mile 5 the trail becomes a 100 yard stretch of sand as it runs along the road- hard going and I just took the road on the way back to bypass it. After this the trail gets narrower until it is simply a dirt track through a mowed strip of grass along a power line right of way. Around mile 7 there started to be patches of mud which had enough solid surface to get through, the longest was probably 20-30 yards long. I wasn't able to reach my goal of 10 miles before turning back due to a large mud puddle (mostly puddle) at mile 8.7- no way to bypass it due to the overgrown vegetation on each side and more mud than I was in the mood to handle. But I enjoyed the ride, it was not crowded when out of Keene (between 9-11am on a Saturday morning). My bike is a hybrid with road tires and did OK.

Ballston Veterans Bike Path

Very flat and straight 3.1 mile each way paved trail. No shade. Follows train tracks alongside Ballston Lake. Parking lot just past trail head at north end.

Delaware and Hudson Rail-Trail

Too Rough for Hybrids

May, 2021 by jimbo22

the small stone surface on top of rough tar results in constant vibration and absorbs energy making travel difficult. A local indicated the trail was completed last year - it is clear they have no concept of how to make a bike trail.

Canalside Rail Trail

Beautiful trails to skate, lots of pebbles near intersections but otherwise clean and smooth.

Delaware and Hudson Rail-Trail

very rough ride

April, 2021 by rbjpye

As mentioned by others this HAS been a great trail.
Currently the trail is in very rough shape due to horse traffic. The type of material used last year to resurface the trail is great for walking and wheeled traffic but is damaged when horses are ridden at a gallop.
Recent attempt to ride resulted in my wife and I leaving the trail and finding a paved road to ride back on rather than endure the constant pounding.
I am trying to contact Vermont Dept of Forest ,Parks, and Rec about this but so far have had no luck getting a response.
I will update this review if new info comes or if the status of the trail surface changes,

Canalside Rail Trail

Easy & Flat!

March, 2021 by pianoemily

This is a really pretty trail. The long stretch along the water in Turners Falls is gorgeous and the paved path is wide enough that others can easily pass. As you continue, it narrows and the buildings nearby are kind of junky..... but it's worth it to be able to see the ducks and geese on the large water section.

Bridge of Flowers

Beautiful spot but not much to walk

March, 2021 by pianoemily

Bridge of Flowers is beautiful! It is so short, however, that I just wanted to make sure others knew it is very much a small space to look at flowers but certainly nothing to make a walk out of. Go and enjoy the scenery but I would not look to make this spot a walk of any real substance. It is more for stopping to look & take some photos. By the time you do that, you'll be done with the very short path.

This trail is just perfect. Great scenery, relatively flat, newly paved, many areas to park along this trail. We parked at Lanesborough had a great lunch at AJ which is right on trail in Adams.

I just went to Black Jack Crossing road. There is no parking. Where is someone parking a horse trailer to get on this side of the trail?

Ashuwillticook Rail Trail

Beautiful Trail

October, 2020 by cutler273

So happy we found this trail! It’s beautifully paved and nearly all flat. There is a gradual downgrade for the last few miles into Adams ... which means an upgrade on the way back. ¿ We live in northern CT so it takes us about 1.5 hrs to get to the southern Trail Head ... but it’s worth the drive. We’ve ridden this trail twice this year and will be back next year!
