Kent Island South Trail

Nice ride

May, 2018 by youker

Tree roots have put a lot of bumps in the trail but they are working on refinishing parts of it. They have marked the bumps with yellow spray paint. They are worse at the south end so I suggest just keeping your eyes open to avoid the bumps. 5/3/18 Youker

Gordons Pond Trail

Gordon’s Mudflat

May, 2018 by vivian.bedoya

Visited in May 2018 & tried to walk from the Ocean Drive trailhead towards Herring Point. This is a nicely planned, well-maintained trail and a lot of cyclists were enjoying it. Unfortunately, the main attraction, Gordon’s Pond, was dry and foul-smelling; more of a caked mudflat than a body of water. After one mile, we turned back because the flies and hot sun made the experience more unpleasant than the smell. We’ll try again next time we’re in Lewes.

Kent Island South Trail

Kent Island South Trail

May, 2018 by carrollball99

Rode the Kent Island South Trail from Matapeake State Park to Romancoke Fishing Pier May 14, 2018. I started from the north end and rode on a Monday and only saw two joggers on the entire round-trip. Did see four bikers just starting the trail as I returned to my car. This trail runs within 15-40 yards of route 8 so you do hear some road noise from the cars. I would say 90% of the trail is in the sun. I only saw a porti-potty at the north end but there are restrooms at the Romancoke end so if you are riding with females or children I suggest you start at the southern end so they have a flush facility to use. If you wanted to add some distance to your ride there are several communities you could ride into. There are 2 gas stations and a carryout pizza shop about 2 miles north of the Matapeake end but I saw nothing along the trail or at the south end.

Enola Low Grade Trail

Sections Closed with No Info / Warning

May, 2018 by baumawb

May 9, 2018 - A generally well-maintained trail with an easy grade and an amazing history. Not an incredibly interesting ride as with a freight line it does not go through any towns.

Planned to ride this entire trail only to find it all cut up. Parked at Fairview Rd west of Quarryville - bridge to the east closed. Headed west for a few miles before I come to another trail closed sign just west of Sigman Rd - apparently Martic Township is resurfacing their section as well as installing a pipeline and repaving a parking lot at 324 / Red Hill Rd. Went around that only to find the next section closed due to the bridge fire. Rejoined the trail at Colemanville Church Rd to ride out the remainder. The roads are quite pleasant so the detours were not a huge hassle but I really hope some kind of cross-township organization gets formed or else these kinds of chopped up experiences will continue to happen. It would have been great if there was more info available - either at the trail closed sign or a central place online. Took some real digging to get any good info.

Junction & Breakwater Trail

J&B and Gordon's Pond

May, 2018 by dillar

Great Loop.... Started at Gordon's Pond Parking lot just north of Rehobeth. Rode north on Gordon's Pond Loop, connected via the Cape Henlopen trail past the bath house and onto Rt. 9 to Lewes. Connected with the Junction and Breakwater back to Rehobeth.
Good Surfaces all the way.... was initially concerned with traffic on Rt. 9, but we rode thru a neighborhood parallel to the road and came back onto Rt. 9 just before the Ferry terminal. Don't take Rt. 9 into Lewes, go an extra block and take Savannah Road into Lewes. There's a Dairy Queen on the corner and you can see the Lewes beach right there. Signs for connection to Breakwater Trail are visible right after the little drawbridge.
The end of the trail is a little confusing...the sign is outdated, but if you go left on rt. 273 and turn right on Canal Crossing Road (~200yds) to Church street you'll arrive at Rehobeth Ave. to turn left into town..

Lower Susquehanna Heritage Greenway Trail

More than just a rail trail...

April, 2018 by daharrold

If you don't mind a cold weather hike, park at the base of the Conowingo Dam. From November through March, the area below the dam is one of the largest nesting locales for bald eagles in the eastern US and you can watch them as you hike. Look to your side as you head south and you will also see some lengthy depressions in the ground, remnants of a canal constructed there in the early 19th century. I have taken scouts hiking there repeatedly over the years.

Martic Forge bridge is no more

April, 2018 by bikerbabe69

So sad to report that the entire wood section of the beautiful Martic Forge trestle bridge burned yesterday, possibly started by brush fires below. This was restored in 2015 after being closed for 20 yrs, linking the section from Safe Harbor to Red hill rd. No word yet on future plans, I believe this is under Martic Twp jurisdiction. I pray this tragedy doesnt derail the planned Safe harbor expansion. The low grade is still a diamond in the rough.

Schuylkill River Trail

From Valley Forge to Philly

April, 2018 by okpilak20061

I wasn't able to ride it for a number of years, but now, what nice improvements are there to be found. From Norristown to Valley Forge, mainly new macadam surface, plus the addition of several spots of racks of bike repair tools. And, the water fountain is about 1.2 miles from Valley Forge Park. There are areas of washboard type macadam around the Conshohocken area, and from Spring Mill to where it branches down to the Schuylkill River, relatively new macadam. Once you leave the tow path in Manayunk, it sort of tosses you into the street, which is crowded, so take the sidewalks, giving care for pedestrian traffic. Once you hit the Fairmount Park area, relatively decent trail surface, but expect heavy traffic all the way to what is now the end of the trail in Philadelphia. I take away one star due to the heavy Philadelphia traffic, and right now the detour around the Art Museum due to construction and confusing signage. The entire route is relatively level, so easy riding.

Since the upper end (above Philadelphia) is far less crowded, one may encounter cycling groups that travel at high speeds and can be annoying if they think they own the trail.

Darby Creek Trail (Pennsylvania)

The trail here is all paved and runs adjacent to a bubbling Creek. It's good for a stroll, particularly with a stroller or dog. The nearby Merry Place playground is well maintained and great for small kids.

Delaware River Trail

A fun waterfront trail

April, 2018 by laurastark

If you like ships, this trail offers a fantastic opportunity to view them up close and learn about shipbuilding and the development of the U.S. navy at the Independence Seaport Museum, which sits trailside.
