Schuylkill River Trail

wish i had done the whole trail

I used to live near philly and only did about 8 miles of the Philly portion. I am not a city person, but this area was beautiful. Trail was great. Extremely scenic. Lots of fun.

Enola Low Grade Trail

Atglen to Georgetown Rd. (372) not a bike trail

August, 2021 by kent5

As previous reviewers have noted the last 5.5 miles at the eastern end of the trail ending in the charming little town of Atglen is not passable by bicycle and includes numerous gates and concrete blockades designed to keep people off what is nothing more than an electrical power line right of way. Might be a future rail trail but at present it should not even be included on the map. Better to head west toward Quarryville. Fortunately, the country roads through the beautiful Amish countryside make for a nice cycling outing.

Chester Valley Trail

Beautiful, but is it safe

July, 2021 by shryock111

I cannot claim to be a frequent trail user. I have used the Struble Trail near my home mostly, and have a little experience with several other rail trail systems in SE PA.

Today being especially beautiful and the weather cool I chose to ride on the Chester Valley Trail. It was understandably busy.

This is a well built trail that travels down Pennsylvania's Great Valley. Though the trail is incomplete (the goal is to tie in with the Schuylkill River Trail) it runs through established neighborhoods as well as farm land along an old right of way that is more greenway than suburban. It is a favorite destination for walkers, runners, families, and bikers since it is convenient to a large population.

I found it unsafe since many of the bike riders do not observe the 15mph speed limit that is clearly marked on the pavement and is appropriate for a multi-use trail. It is a wide trail and safe for two way 'traffic'. However, when bikers traveling over 20mph on the trail choose to pass in the middle of the trail, where there is east and west bound congestion, the risk they create for collision is a serious threat to everyone. I found the use of audible signals or vocal warnings by those passing is also infrequent.

I ride on the trail too, but I don't understand why bikers choose to break the speed limit rule on a trail that is so frequently used by runners and walkers - especially when it is crowded. If the CVT was designed for such high speeds there would be mandatory lanes for bike riders.

Michael Castle Trail

beautiful trail

July, 2021 by millercamema1_tl

One of the nicest trails we’ve ridden along the C&D canal. Start at Shaffers Canal House Restaurant and ride on blacktop trail. Beautiful scenery! Ice cream shop along trail, or restaurant half way or if you make it to Delaware City, be sure to eat at Crabby Ducks on water!!!

Downs Park Trail

no biking here again

July, 2021 by jarold35

We love exploring new sites around us and came to this location this past Sunday July 11th, 2021. This is a gigantic picnic place with plenty of parking space. If you want to ride your bike, avoid this location. Poor visibility; sharp corners and people walking on the trail. Nature!? Yes, on weekdays. This weekend people were blasting cars aududio and wa just unberable. We are not returning to this place.

Michael Castle Trail

Chesapeake City MD to Delaware City DE

July, 2021 by boncelet

Combine the Mike Castle trail with the Ben Cardin trail to go between Chesapeake City MD to Delaware City DE, a distance of about 15 miles. The trail runs along the north side of the C&D canal (Chesapeake bay to Delaware river). It is asphalt the whole way, but you can take short gravel excursions if you want. About midway, the trail deviates from the canal to go around a marina. This diversion includes some hills and hairpin turns. Be careful of your speed if on a bike. Other than these diversions, the trail is flat. It can be windy near the Delaware City end (the eastern end).

Lums Pond State Park is just to the north of the trail. It has camping, hiking, and a lake for boating (but not swimming).

Suggested restaurants include Schaeffer's Canal House in Chesapeake City, Grain H2O at the marina midway along the trail, and Crabby Dicks (end of Clinton St in Delaware City--with a great view of the Delaware River).

I like to start at one of the parking spots along the canal and ride the roundtrip (about 30 miles). I get lunch at one of the restaurants.
