Trail is really great but could definitely use some more gravel in certain areas where the path is shaded and it doesn't get as much sun the sand can suck all the energy out of you. Of course that could just be in the Winter months.
Beautiful trail to ride right next to the lake and through parks. Most of the trail is on the sidewalk, but some is on a bike lane in the street (low traffic).
We look for trail segments where we can ride 6-10 miles, then find a meal, then return to our car. The Breda-Carnarvon segment on the Sauk Rail Trail is one such ride. We parked our car on a shady street near the fairgrounds park in Breda. (Breda has at least one store where you can buy provisions) Got on the paved trail and rode 7 miles to Carnarvon, a segment with gentle grades and the bridge approaches are good. Just to the west of the trail in Carnarvon is a bar/cafe, that happened to have a lunch buffet on the day we were there. Its a great trail with well maintained right-of-way. An alternative would have been to ride to Carroll, eat, and return. Or if we had been more ambitious, to ride to Lake City and back. We'll do those rides next time.
This is a nice paved trail with a variety from fields to ball fields to more residential areas to city parks. It isn’t super well marked so having this app helped tremendously. The trail actually extends past 24th to C38 so if you go to the end it’s actually a little longer than stated. Worth the ride!
Very peaceful and beautiful. Short, but nice. Only 4 stars b/c the crushed rock can be soft and uneven in places.
Very peaceful and beautiful ride. Only a couple miles, but very nice. The reason for only 4 stars is that the crushed rock makes a soft and somewhat uneven riding surface.
We only walked a bit of the trail, but saw no one on it the whole 30-45 min we were on it.
Took our 6-month-old puppy on a summer, Monday, mid-afternoon. Met one walker and one bicycler. It was mostly quiet and mostly shady with benches along the way. It is near a highway, but far enough away and within a speed zone, so even semis were not a challenge. A nice walk on a basically flat trail.
They have added about 3.75 miles to the west of the trail from Hyvee in Spirit Lake west to Vick's Corner on Highway 86.
This is a nice, almost completely paved trail through the town. Benches are placed along the trail. This is a flowing trail with flat areas and hills.
Awesome biking trail! Very smooth packed gravel trail. Restrooms and air stations available in some areas. Plan full day and bring water/energy bars.
I rode this trail 8/1/2020 and it is in great condition. A majority of it has newer cement and in the last few years most of the bridges have had cement replace the wood planks, even the wood bridges have newer cement approaches that are smooth. Make sure to ride all the trail in Swan Lake, it is all new along with ride around Black Hawk Lake.
Many places to eat in Carroll but Lakeview is limited. On Sunday Morning no place for breakfast until 9 am, Kathy's Korner is very good food! On Sunday's nothing open between Lakeview and Carroll until 3pm.
