Rochester, Minnesota is home to a whole host of excellent multi-use pathways and trails, giving cyclists and pedestrians ample opportunity to explore the outdoors and get in plenty of safe recreation and exercise. The Civic Center Trail lies just across the Zumbro River from downtown and the city's Mayo Civic Center, connecting the urban heart of Rochester with neighborhoods and parks on the eastern side of town.
The path begins in the west at a junction with the Zumbro North Trail, and proceeds east along the side of the active railroad tracks, making this a prime example of a city using rail-with-trail to improve their off-road transportation network. The path passes through the outskirts of Oakwood Cemetery and continues through a series of residential blocks; the trail is relatively flat, with some sections offering shade from nearby trees. There are several road crossings along the way, so trail users should be sure to exercise caution. On the eastern end, the trail leads into the lovely, forested grounds of Quarry Hill Park, where you can continue your journey along the Quarry Hill Family Trail and the John Wellner Memorial Trail.
Parking is available at the western end of the trail at the city's Mayo Field, although the lot is restricted to permit holders during normal business hours. Additional parking is available near the eastern end of the trail at East Park, located at E Center Street and 15th Avenue NE, and within Quarry Hill Park, located at 701 Silver Creek Road NE.
